    Welcome to Major Geeks!

We can possibly help you if you are running Windows; however if you are running Linux and having a problem, you will have to post in a Linux forum. Yes it is possible that you Master Boot Record was infected but I would expect that installing Linux would correct this. So would using a new hard disk; however, it is also possible that your BIOS is infected. If that is the case, you will have to reflash your BIOS to fix this.

We are going to try to install a new HD today in about an hour or two hopefully with windows also its seem to spread to a laptop on my network if that helps find out where it is can a virus like this reside on a modem or router by chance? the main problem im thinking about is if I install a new hard drive and it works which my hopes really arent up for that working if its able to spread to my other computer what could I do to keep it from just instantly coming onto the new HD im planning to install Kapersky before I connect to the internet can u suggest a free Beefy firewall or something ill update this once I get the new HD in

If you have shared drives and files on a network and you have any of the type of infections that can spread over a network (and there are many of these) then you should remove the infected computers from the network before all PCs are infected.

Also there many infections that spread via removable devices like USB drives. Thus if you have one of these types of infections, any removable device used on an infected PC is likely infected and in addition, any PC that this removable device is then plugged into, will get infected.

As stated above, infected systems need to be removed from the network and must be cleaned before putting them back on a shared network. Note that if you install a new drive and reinstall your Windows OS, it could be clean until you connect it to your network and then get infected itself if you have other PCs on the network that are infected.
