very slow computer-help me speed up

I have a Dell 4600. It has 256 mb ram,2.19 ghz celeron, and I have 15 folders on my desktop along with a few other programs. I have run anti-spyware/adaware, defraged, cleared my internet chache, and my computer is still very slow. I even removed some start up programs. Would you please help me speed up my computer.

Malware is the #1 reason for poor system performance. If you system is clean then yes, please post back in this thread. As controlmind pointed out get more RAM, you should have at least 512Mb of RAM when using XP.
