My computer is so slow. I have done everything I can think of. I ran antivir, cleaned out 371 items from desktop, pictures, etc. that hae been sitting there unused. I did disk cleanup. And it is slower than it was. HELP!!!
Oh and I have a Dell with XP .

Okay. Lots more has been done. I had done pretty much everything you mentioned. I hadn't defragmented, cause it kept saying you do not need to defragment. I downloaded the smart one you had and used that. I do need to do another spyware as antivir did find one trojan. I emptied lots more stuff out and it is still basically slow. So I know there is still something going on. This is the biggest emptying out I have ever done on here!! I believe it says I have .99GB of ram?? Not so good at this yet. WIll keep you posted. and THANKS!!!

What make and model of machine?
    How much RAM?
What all is on your Startup list?
Have you run any type of Registry cleaners?

I don't see anything on that listing that needs to be on Startup.
    My own is
    AV
    firewall
    SpywareGuard
    SpywareBlaster
    WinPatrol

Seems a tad better but still not as good as it should be after getting rid of so much junk! And all of a sudden I am getting the most annoying popups!! Mostly insurance ones. But I have never gotten them before.

Okay. First question - how do we know if we have more than one firewall?

They can tell by looking at your log files and advise you on what to do.

But this is where the problem starts when I try to do this read and run me first. First thing it says is make sure you only have one virus and firewall. I don't know how to do that. And under that it says to remove quarantined files with examples for which norton you have. I don't HAVE Norton. I am so confused.

If you don't use Norton or McAfee then don't worry about emptying quarantined. Skip that step and move on.

With regards to the firewall, what Firewall do you KNOW you have installed?

Take a look in your system tray and mouse over what's running there... your firewall's icon should be present there.

Take a look in add/remove programs or start > all programs. Use Ccleaner to see an uninstall list and post us a screenshot perhaps. But if you're in need of malware removal, just go ahead and post your logs ;) We wont mind

Also I was told to get rid of everything in my startup. But when I switch it to Normal, they all come back.

You need to ensure that your machine is set to normal mode and not using the troubleshooting selective start up.

Have you been using MSCONFIG to manage your start ups? Or Ccleaner? If so, this is a bad idea, and you should be using other software such as startUp CPL

Perhaps it might be more helpful to you to request that this thread be moved to the malware section.
There, they can give you better guidance.

The only firewall I know of is Windows.

Hrlow2 is right, you should fire up a new thread in malware removal if your machine is behaving oddly, or displaying typical malware type symptoms.

I am getting more confused the more I read. Use ccleaner to see an uninstall list?

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

we dont need to see an uninstall list now :) That was if we were going to determine what 3rd party software firewall(s) you used... however as you explained, you only use the windows firewall.

That's all I know of. I don't know if any others are on here cause I don't know how to check.

I explained to you how to check. :) I gave you various ways. If you are going to go ahead and move to malware removal rather than slowing things down by posting here, we could tell easily from your logs what firewalls you do have :)

Okay - just remembered - we had trend micro and uninstalled it a while ago. It will not go away. There is still one left thats named tmdshell.dll. We can not get rid of this.

Don't worry about it :) if you HAD trend micro and now use something else, whoever takes on your thread in MALWARE REMOVAL will deal with any remnants from Trend and kill them :)

Malware removal is indeed where you should be heading now as you explained... you're having pop ups...
