VGA vs HDMI display, which is sharper?

Will I get a sharper picture if I use HDMI display instead of VGA? I hooked my friends computer to my monitor, but didn't notice any difference. I've been considering getting PEG card that has HDMI input.

The HDMI video/audio transmission standard will probably supplant and replace VGA and DVI. Content providers love HDMI because it has encryption from the source which the receiving device decrypts. As far as sharper images are concerned; HDMI has built-in bit balancing ( 8 bits stretched to 10 ) so that adjacent conductors have less impact on the data stream. It's a strategy that attempts to deny the coincident effect of all signals being driven "plus" or "minus" at the same time. An extra layer of encoding also allows for error-correction "on the fly" which should give you very precise signal reproduction. So, even with the longer cable standard, HDMI is going to provde a cleaner, more hi-fidelity image than the analog VGA. :)

Would and HDMI monitor be able to support high definition video? I have a Dell Ultrasharp 1707FP

The Dell Ultrasharp 1707FP has an analog VGA and digital DVI connection, however it lacks the HDMI interface. An HDMI data stream will not be decoded by this particular CRT. The HDMI interface can decode and use DVI signals, but the DVI interface cannot use HDMI signals. :)

I misspoke. After reading a FAQ at HDMI.org, I have to amend my statement.

Sorry about that. Apparently the only stumbling blocks to full compatability is the HDCP copy protection scheme and support for TV formats. Otherwise you're A-OK. :)
