I'm running Windows XP, SP3. Today I foolishly ventured into a dangerous neighbourhood (guitar tabs) and when I tried to click "Back" nothing happened...then my browser window (Firefox) closed itself. Then my firewall (CA) popped up saying something was trying to access the internet (I think it said nfra.exe), which I Denied. And now when I open Firefox and IE there is just a blank page. Firewall says nfra.exe is active but is blocked from accessing the net. My CA virus scan came up with nothing. When I logged out of my account an error box popped up but was gone before I could copy what it said.

I am going to start going through your cleaning procedure, although obviously I cannot download new tools and will just use the ones from last time. I would appreciate any other tips or info you might have in the meantime...

    Thanks, Mez

Uh oh...just googled nfra.exe and it seems this can affect my network (I thought routers acted as firewalls?)...so does that mean I shouldn't be writing this on a laptop connected to our wireless network? :( I'm scared...cleaning routers is out of my depth.

Here are my logs. I didn't download the newer MGtools because I couldn't figure out how to get rid of the old one.

Please note: it is only my user account that has internet problems, the others are fine. When I ran Spybot in my account, it detected that IE is set to use a proxy localhost:7070. Not sure what this means.

After doing the cleaning, Firefox now has a "Proxy Server Refused Connection" error and IE now has a "Page cannot be displayed message".

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You were supposed to remove the old version of MGtools as you were instructed the last time you were here ( see message # 7 here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=170509 )

You need to use the current version of MGtools as requested in the READ & RUN ME. Just download and run the new program. Then attach the new log.

Do you use a Proxy Server to connect to the internet? If not, then you need to change your browser settings so that it is not trying to use a proxy. If you do use a Proxy, then you need to make sure the proper values are entered.

    Here is the new log.

I feel a bit foolish :-o ...checked my internet settings and they had been changed to use a proxy server (in my user account). I assume it was this nrfa thingy.

You just have a little minor cleanup to do.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [nfra] c:\windows\nfra.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Here is the log.

Things seem to be hunkydory now, my antivirus and antispyware scans came up clear and I have had no internet problems since I manually changed back the proxy settings.

Can I delete Combofix, MGtools, Spybot and CCleaner now?

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
