I currently have an Nvidia Geforce2 400 32mb card, not DDR. It's acting up, and I'd like to get a new one. On a limited budget, with a non-gamer system, would this be a good replacement?

Frankly, a long time Nvidia user recently converted to ATI. While these dorks on websites compare framerates, what counts is image quality. Anything beyond 30-40 fps is useless, and ATI is the constant winner in quality. Also, the newer chips are taking double slots.

Dig around, see what you can afford by ATI and compare before you dive in.

Thanks MA, I took your advice, and found the following 3. I'm leaning toward the Rosewill, but would love someone to tell me that the cheaper cards I found would do me just as well. I simply want a nice image, and fast enough for web browsing and a few small games. We're definately not gamers.

    Rosewill ATI RADEON 9600SE Video Card, 128MB DDR, 64-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "96SE-AD-128B" -RETAIL 69.00

edit, the other 2 cards wouldn't post for some reason

    I wouldn't consider $130 "budget".

Both the GeForce FX 5200 (~$60) and the ATI 9200/9200SE (~$75 and ~$50, respectively) are very popular budget cards. You won't be running Doom 3 or FarCry with them, but they will still run circles around an old workhorse GeForce2 MX. Personally, I would avoid the GeForce MX 4000 line if you plan on playing any games at all.

Here's a useful article from the end of last year on budget cards that's still very good. (They use a 5200 Ultra, which is quite a bit more expensive than the 5200, and has largely disappeared.)

Okay, here's the other 2 I was looking at.....

    Jetway ATI RADEON 9200SE Video Card, 64MB DDR, 64-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "92SE-AD-064B", -RETAIL 40.00

The price on the 9600SE you posted is fairly attractive. The whole of the SE line has some difficulty with newer games because of the smaller memory bus, however.

Thanks, Chicken, I'll look at that article after I've gotten a bit of shuteye! :)

My wife plays neopets and zuma, and I play chess, and that's about the extent of our gaming!! :D You think the little bit extra for the 9600 is worth it? I have 4x AGP, and it says it will run on it, but I'm sure it will be slower than it's full potential.

Well, after reading that article, it seems that the extra money for the 9600 would be worth it, and it's not a whole lot extra anyway. Interesting read, I've never looked at benchmark tests before.

Thanks folks, I think my question has been answered. :)
