: Hi. My name is maryhigginsrice. I believe I have a pertinent question con-
    cerning my PC. I would like to watch the tv shows I downloaded from my computer on my television. I used to accomplish this task with dell computer;
but I have brought another PC. The video card in the Dell computer had an s-video out plug which the Emachine does not. Do I need to purchase a new
video card? Can this process be done without buy new hardware? How do I install a new video card? I know this a lot to digest, but any information will be appreciated. Thank you. maryhigginsrice.

I believe you will indeed need to get a new Video Card (VC) unless you consider salvaging the current VC from your Dell. Essentially you'll need one with an S-Video out option so you can stream the data out to your TV, you could obtain one fairly cheaply $20-30 US. It is quite easy to install a VC and we can show you how if you need (pics).

Firstly do you have a desktop tower (ATX Case I believe)?

Basically you will need to remove the side of your case (2 screws) and slot the card into the appropiate Mother Board (mobo) slot and screw it in. Could you DL EVEREST Home and see if this will provide more info on your mobo so we can ascertain whether it is AGP or a PCIe slot which will dictate what sort of VC you will need:

Start with this and print out a sys summary .txt report and attach.

Bold Eagle thank you for answering my post. I printed out a sys summary text report for you can assist me further. I have a tower computer. Where would I buy a video from the internet? Can you also provide pics, because I am not very good with installing hardware. Thank you. maryhigginsrice.

Okay I assume you must be in the US and the better sites I have read for buying PC stock are:

    http://www.newegg.com/

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/

Thats if you don't mind purchasing online w a credit card (many feel secure enough with these 2 above. For your purposes here are a couple of examples that have S-Video out:
    ($59.99-$20 rebate)
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1776106&sku=P450-8568
    ($59.99-$20 rebate)
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2145957&sku=D10-2090
    ($29.99)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814133135

These are some examples but can you give ma an idea of how much you would like to spend and then I will try to ensure you get the best for your money. Start with this and your card must be an AGP and not a PCI-e card.

I am doing a bit of research on your motherboard and looking for a pic as I will be able to show you better with a copy of that.

Yes it was very exhausting and sadly my girlfriend was undertaking final studies for her degree and was not able to help much.

AGP is a type of expansion slot (upto X 8 data) on your motherboard for a Video Card (with newer boards having a PCI-e slot which allows video data to
"move" at 16 x standard speed).

Okay we will do an initial visual observation of your motherboard to ensure it has an AGP slot and allows us to add an expansion card (Video Card), can you tell me if yours is the same as in the pic.

To do this you will need to turn the power of at the mains for the PC and at the back of the PC case. Unplug all the cables at the rear and place the PC somewhere you can obtain access to it (I use my dining table).

Next remove the 2 screws indicated in the pic by red circles of the "PC rear" so we can remove the "Right Side Panel" when looking at it front on. Pull the side panel back about 1/2 and inch and then sideways, be a little careful here as sometimes there maybe wires attached.

You should see 3 white PCI slots in the top left corner and a brown/grey AGP slot immediately to their right but when you look into your case the should be in the bottom left hand corner as this is how it will be mounted within your case. This is "D" in the schematic diagram and circled with yellow in the "mary's mobo" pic.

If there is an obvious AGP slot and the mobo looks exactly the same as the one in the pic then post back and then we will move onto the next stage.

Always look twice and assess things before you undertake them and just be patient (never force things) you should find it straight forward after a little practice.

Yes, I do have that AGP slot. Sorry for taking so long to write back.
