If the above doesn't work, try downloading and installing the latest version of Windows Media Player. This will install your codecs again!

(I don't use codec packs, I only install individual codecs as needed.)

A codec-information utility can tell you exactly what codecs are missing or broken. I like GSpot
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/GSpot_d4293.html

just load your avi into Gspot, and it will tell you what codec was used to create the video, and whether it is available on your pc.

    hmmm....
I wish some of the video user gurus would pop in here.
the only time I've had something like this happen is when I have more than one player and/or video editor running at the same time.

What codec is required for your video?
I've heard that Xvid and Divx sometimes have corruption problems, if either one of those is your requirement, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the codec.

Here's another long shot. Some video players use Overlay, and run into problems if you are having driver troubles.
You could dis-able hardware acceleration and see what that does.
    right-click desktop, Properties > Advanced > Troubleshoot
then set Hardware Acceleration to none. see if the video displays properly then.

Maybe your video display driver is corrupted and needs replacement.

If you are running XP, use a restore point before the avi broke.
