Video driver "Code 10" after filesystem fixes

On a new Windows XP install, brand new HDD, it suddenly started a lovely "reboot loop" which, after much messing about, I finally fixed (chkdsk wouldn't work, until tada! it did, and merrily fixed a bunch of ntfs problems). The only thI I can think that might have caused my problem below was an attempt at a manual System Restore.

Everything is back to normal, except my video card (a Radeon 9600, old but perfectly good) mysteriously seems to not be working. That is, it works just fine on a separate XP install, but suddenly on this one I'm seeing I get the error "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". I'm not sure the exact sequence of fixes I tried (uninstalls, reinstalls...) but it started working fine, could play games etc. But on restart it went back to Code 10. I've tried driver cleaning programs, old drivers, Omega drivers, rolling back drivers, uninstalling drivers, safe mode install (didn't work, couldn't see directx) and everything I can think of, but I can't get it working! At this point I'm considering just reinstalling XP, but I'd really rather not. Any magic bullets you guys can think of?

Never mind, did a Restore Point recover and it seems to be working.
