Video driver quit responding (and has recovered), sometimes bluescreen, Windows 7

Hi, I've recently been having a problem with my display driver failing.

Sometimes it recovers, sometimes it does not and gives me the blue screen.

I was using Vista, and while playing a game (Infantry from SOE), it started crashing (while only playing the game). Then, it started crashing even when do stuff in Powerpoint. When on Vista, the system would never recover and would not even give me a blue screen.

Initially, I thought crappy game code did something to my window so I went and got the Windows 7, reformatted and thought I would be good.

Wrong. So then I went and got a beefed up video card (ATI HD 4670) hoping it would solve the problem. Wrong again. Now, it will either give me the blue screen or will recover from not responding and show the error.

This is very frustrating and I have no clue as to what else to do. Windows 7 hasn't been installed for 2 whole days yet, the video card is brand new. Could it be the PCIe slot on the motherboard?

    Hi

So your PC now has Windows 7 on it still? if so is it 32bit or 64bit?

What would the BSOD error message be in full? as this will help narrow the cause down alot.

Just so I/others have a grasp of your PC hardware please follow the below as written and it will give us a log of what hardware your PC has, this gives us information to check on drivers etc as that could be the cause of this in the main.

In Device Manager do you have any yellow ! marks, if so by what?

Yes it is and hopefully we can track down the issue, it is more likely drivers, but the BSOD error will help us, but also do check out your ram, with this HERE (only have 1 stick of ram in at a time) I dont think its the issue but as you where having problems in Vista and now a new clean install of Win7 it maybe bad ram.

Check your PC temps, could be caused by high temps as these do give BSOD errors and restarts at times, check the vents and grills and the CPU heatsink and fan for dust and fluff buildup, can check temps with Everest, in the Computer > Sensor menu

    Sorry, I have 64-bit Windows 7.

Here is the BSOD error msg:

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
    Locale ID: 1033

    Additional information about the problem:
    BCCode: 3b
    BCP1: 00000000C0000005
    BCP2: FFFFF80002AD5839
    BCP3: FFFFF88005F7AF40
    BCP4: 0000000000000000
    OS Version: 6_1_7600
    Service Pack: 0_0
    Product: 256_1

    The Everest report is attached.

I have no yellow marks in device manager.

And the RAM test said my RAM is fine.

Thanks for the help, sir, I really do appreciate it.

    Hi

No problems, lets hope we can get to the bottom of this issues, but the BSOD message you posted doesnt tell us much as its generic message, try BlueScreenView and see what it says or just write down the code when the BSOD appears, just attach a BlueScreenView log in a notepad text file as you did the Everest log.

Yeah, I am really starting to think it's the motherboard... Even though it's fairly new.

Now, I can't even get the computer to boot windows... The BIOS boot screen appears but freezes when starting windows. I am on my MacBook right now trying to get the damned desktop to startup. It is giving me the Windows error recovery screen and giving me the options to "Launch Startup Repair" or "Start Windows Normally." I am scared to do the startup repair b/c it likes to erase data.

Is it possible that the motherboard is going out? I mean it seems that the motherboard is having problems communicating with the peripherals because it's giving me display driver errors AND not starting Windows (i.e. not communicating with hard drive properly?).

Ok so while typing this post it sent me to another bluescreen after refusing to repair windows by system restore.

Here's all the codes that appeared:

    UGCODE_USB_DRIVER

    Technical Information:

    STOP: 0x000000FE, 0x0000000000000008, 0x0000000000000006, 0x000000000000000A, 0xFFFFFFA800223F000

    BAH!

could it be too much drawing from your power supply?

I don't think so as this is a new issue and I've played all types of videos and games and haven't had an issue.

Also, I used the Windows repair just so my computer would start up and Windows started this time so I now I'm thinking this not a hardware concern. Luckily, Windows didn't write over too many programs...

    Hi

So is Windows behaving itself now?

The Stop error code, links to USB drivers of some sort, so if you do get that BSOD again, would need to have an attched minidump file, to see what the exact faulting file/dll is, this info will help.

Causes could be a USB printer, USB internet modem, USB external HDD, USB keyboard and mouse and USB webcam, so if you have these types of devices please mention what they are (already know your printer and did you install the latest known Windows 7 driver from HP, and following the install instructions)?

Could unplug a few USB items (not keyboard and mouse) and see if you get a BSOD.

Surprisingly, Windows is behaving itself. I haven't had a BSOD since it performed the startup repair.

I do have USB printer, mouse, and keyboard. I also have things like digital cameras I hook up every so often, but they do not stay connected all the time.

    Hi Nullnvoid

Well fingers X'd that Windows behaves itself from now on, if it happens again we can go from there, but make a note of what USB items are plugged in at the time, but hoping it wont come to that now.

Yeah, it's been doing great, so far. I've done everything but play the game that started all this.

I'm almost scared to load the game and play it, for I fear the game is poorly written...

Anyways, thanks for the help... You never know, though, I may be back on here in a few hours...

    Hi

Is this the exact same error again, if you have a BSOD code then please post it, was it the same game?

Any recreation steps that you can remember that led upto this happening? new installs or updates etc etc
