    Hi,
    Any advice on this is appreciated.

    I have a little HD video camera (it doesn't HAVE to record in HD) that saves it's video clips to .mov format.

    I am trying to edit this video in the most basic way, things like, put two clips together as one clip, cut peaces out of a clip, basic things like that. It would be nice to be able to throw sound over the top as well but no big deal.

    I know nothing about this sort of thing, so looking for something very simple.

    My first thoughts were microsoft movie maker as there are tons of tutorials and walk-throughs available. However my files are in .mov format and soo...

    Ideally i would like to convert my video clips into a file format that movie maker likes, (I did this along time ago and the color was all messed up on HD clips, the sound off, took about an hour for tiny clips, and was generally crappy, can't remember the program I used)

    If quality file conversion is something that can't be done for cheap(as in free) then, can anyone recommend a beginner video editing program for for .mov files? (free)

    If there is not an easy solution to this, and I really just need to learn more about it, a push in the right direction (as far as web sites to read) is greatly appreciated.

    On this site I saw
    "Kates Video Convertor 4.4.0
    Kate's Video Cutter
    Kates Video Joiner"
    any thoughts?

    Hi

    Not used those apps, but first off what version of Windows are you using?

    What you could try is using Any Video Converter thats free and HERE and convert the .mov to .avi (WMV1) that Win Movie Maker can handle, just do a backup of your .mov files before converting.

    See screenshot below I just took of the settings.

    Here are the limitations on Win 7 starter:

    Windows 7 Starter does not include:
    * Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the “Windows Basic” or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
    * Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
    * The ability to switch between users without having to log off.
    * Multi-monitor support.
    * DVD playback.
    * Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.
    * Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.
    * Domain support for business customers.
    * XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7.

    I'm not sure yet what programs work on the starter edition.

    Just in case anyone else trying to get information along these same lines, here is some things I found.

    Windows 7 does not come with Microsoft Movie Maker.

    instead they have "Windows Live Movie Maker"
    can be downloaded here
    (just a note if you download it: a bunch of other junk you may or may not want will come with it, such as windows messenger, easy enough to get rid of in the add/remove programs area of your control panel)

    I am not sure how this program compares to Microsoft Movie Maker as i dont really have any experience with it.

    .mov files are compatible. I found this very helpful info on what files types you can edit.

    There was also some info on getting Microsoft Movie Maker on your windows 7 system here

    This is what I learned on the subject since i first posted, hopefully it will save someone else some time :)
