What files do you want to convert?
    Give source and destination format.
Virtualdub is a good free one for .avi files.

I want to be able to play video files on WMP. I'm quite new at this and not very familiar with all the formats and what they provide in terms of playing them in WMP.

You can play most video files in windows media player.
Why/what do you want to convert?

First off, this is not the place to look for help on copying DVDs. It's illeagal. That being said, there are many programs to assist you in getting home videos into a format to watch on your DVD player. You are going to have to do some research (ie: learning curve is in effect). You are also going to need to get help from the appropriate BBs.

    DVD uses a VOB format
Investigate these format types: VCD SVCD MPEG2 MPEG4
If you have the money to burn, buy a dual-layer DVD+/- RW

Places to visit on the web for video help.

    http://www.divx.com <-- a high compression video codec

    Good Luck

1st of all, don't ASSUME that I want to copy illegal DVD's coz you know what happen when you do.... I just want to trasfer some files (which I obtained legally if I might add) onto a disk for future viewing on my home entertainment system.

Man, you really have to be carefull these days or you'll get slapped around for asking an innocent question
In any case, thanks for replying

First off, you don't even know what DVD's he is talking about, so how can you immediately say it's illegal?

akanrg, your PC has video that you want to be able to play on your home entertainment system's DVD player, is that correct?

Also, please provide information like what format the video is in and if you have a DVD burner etc.

    Insomniac,

I believe this should answer your questions. Plus, the web links I provided are a better source of information and resources.

First of all, he wants to convert the files to a DVD compatible format. Second, it's actually legal under the DMCA to make archive copies of all digital media one owns for personal use. Try this: DivxtoDVD .

If you have a newer DVD player, check the manual. It may be set up to play Divx, MPEG1&2, and other video formats.

Thanks Just Playin, but I don''t think that is going to sink in unfortunately.

Where does he get illegal from?

Anyway, thanks for the info Just Playin, I wasn't aware of that sort of software.

I am so glad you two are still here. Someone needs to carry the torch in the absence of the thread originator. :p :p
