Video NOT paying

I recently was sent some .mpg video files that were recorded on a Sony camcorder. They were copied from the disk to the computer (my brothers) he then sent them to me to put into a slide show that I am doing for him. These files only partially play on my computer. For example, in windows media player (version 11) the file opens and starts to play and even though the video is 0:01:45 long, the player says it is 5 seconds long. The video stops at 5 seconds but the audio continues to play. This also happens in ProShow Gold (The slideshow program I am using) and Media Player Classic. I also have on my computer a program called, "VLC Media Player" and it works fine in that player.

I spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Microsoft and they could not fix it either, so I gave up on them altogether. They obviously do not have a clue. We even rolled back the windows media player to version 9 and still have the same problem. My brother is able to play them on his computer using windows media player 9.

I have even tried just converting the files to another format using "Prism Video Converter" but that produces even worse results.

Would love some input on this problem as I am needing a solution fast so I can produce this slide show.

    Thanks,
    Houston
