I cant seem to get my video player to work any more it does not matter the sites i go to. I do Twitter, twitch, youtube and face book and now its not working at all. It started as a problem where if i ran my pc for too long it would become a problem but now i cant get a video to load on any of those sites. I doubt it works anywhere at this point. PC specs are as follows: windows 7 professional, Nvidia geforce rtx 2060, Asus p6t v2 motherboard with an intel core 17 920 cpu. 24 gigs of ram. 1 tb hard drive.

Theres further complications. I have had trouble for some time getting java to update. It has failed every time i tried. I am not proud of it but I have had trouble getting this pc to update fully. I just did a restore point from failled update. Im uploading a file of the error message i got. This pc has been mostly reliable but I have had some teething issues with the motherboard. Specificly i have had sometimes when i installed windows to re seat the ram and not all the ram would register at times. This was not a problem most of the time except when i tried to update. As for why i would re seat the ram it was a piece of advice i got from my local pc repair shop. It seemed to allow me to boot up my pc and it would work. But i really avioided any windows updates because of it.

And yet the error posted is javascript. They are NOT the same thing.

All sites online and yet you failed to mention what browser(s) you've tried on those sites.

    So clarify :
    1. java or javascript problem or perhaps both.
    2. What browsers?
    3.
It's hard to tell from that when the last update was installed.

I'm using four Windows 7 computers that have been patched through January 2020. I have trouble with some videos on YouTube but that is because of my default browser, Palemoon. I switch to FF ESR or Vivaldi and have no problem. I don't do twitter twitch, or FB.

1 please understand that im not trying to be obtuse but im not shure how to answer that question. How do i figure out in this case weather its java or javascript.
    2. I use multiple browsers. It allows me to use them for different things. Right now im using firefox, Cent and brave all of them have playback issues.
    3. I cant give as precise an answer as i would like because its been difficult to update. Windows update system at least for me does not show in what order i have to do the updates. I have tried to select all the updates and download them at once and that has broke my machine when i tried it. So instead i was looking at the date when each update was released and going from the oldest ones. I think i got to the updates that were in the 2016's mostly the updates dealing with the basic updates for windows. I got the sp 1 pack to install. I was working on the .net framework updates. I have not done some of the 3.5.1 updates yet.

    1. Java update is done at Oracle's site: https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/javase-downloads.html
Is this where you went? If not, then you are not using Java.
Javascript is bundled with the browser so updating it is out of your control.
I can see where you get confused because I went googling and sites telling you jow to update javascript give directions for updating Java. There is a lot of misinformation posted.

    2.
    What is Cent?

    3. Please go to update History and capture a screenshot of the last 5 updates. I have notecards for each month so I can tell you what KB to download.

Ok so sorry about the delay in replies. Heres the update history files you requested. Also I do have oricles java. That last file is the auto updater that pops up once in a blue moon saying i need to update and then fails.

Well the history shows that lots of updates were done on October 1st. Before that the previous update was September 2018.
It will take me quite a bit of time to look over all the KB numbers to see what has been installed and what is missing.

What happens when you click here to continue with the Java update? Oracle updates Java every 4 months.
The last update was in July https://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2020/07/oracle-java-se-jre-security-updates.html
You'll notice in the article that the next patch will be 20 October, so after you've updated Java, you will see a popup a week from now.

Show me the plugins in Firefox. I don't use Cent and Brave so it is useless for me to inquire about them.

    You said
Is this a program? If so, what video player is now broken?

The September 2018 update was part of NET framework.
I looked at the first update done Oct 1, 2020, KB2533552 and this is from 2011!
    Source: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB2533552
My notes don't go back that far.
Everything on your 3rd screenshot is very old updates. The newest one KB2900986 is from Nov. 2013!

Why hasn't the computer been updated in 9 years?

The newest update on the 2nd history file, KB3006121 is from Dec. 2014
    Source: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3006121
I do have notes for Dec. 2014. That was an update I hid and never installed.
    I did install 3003057, 3008923, 3013126, 3011970. I can't find any of those installed.

January 2015: 3019215, 3019978, 3021674, 3022777, 3023266. I don't see any of those on the first page of history updates.

The first page also shows older updates so it would appear that the computer was doing updates from 2011 through 2014.

Looking at Feb. 2015 I see 1 update was installed. It was only offered on one of my computers (Pro version) and I didn't install it because it had to do with Lithuanian currency.
    Feb. 2015: 3004361, 3004375, 3013455, 3023562, 3029944 and 3031432 need to be installed.

Because like i said previously i tried to update and the updates broke my pc. I was reluctant to update because of that and also because its hard to figure out in which order i should update.

...........I would like to try again to get this pc fully updated but im trying to and failling to think of a method that will allow me to do that and then deal with it if it breaks again.

What happens when i try and contiue the update for java. It trys to install it then says it failed to do so.

When i say video player i mean as in i cant play any video when this pc starts acting up. It does not matter the browser or the source. Its happened to me on Youtube, facebook and twitch to name a few but even random video on a page just wont play.

As far as Java, I removed it from all four Windows computers in July of 2014. What do you need Java for? If you don't know, perhaps you don't need it.

I've never tried to do years and years of updates. The way I do it when people are behind for a year or two is to look up the updates for each month and do that month then move onto the next.

The servicing stack update that controls updates has been updated many times in 9 years so you probably don't have the most up to date SSU installed and that's why updates break.

As far as video, if your computer is that many years behind, you are still probably depending on flash for video.
Viewing rando videos on a page assumes you are viewing the page in a browser so it all comes down to your browser possibly not using the correct thing.
Flash has been replaced with html5.
That's why I asked you to show me the FF plugins installed. You might not have what you need.
What version of FF are you running.

I'm running FF ESR 78.3 and here are my two plugins

what do i need java for? I play minecraft for instance. It needs java and i was under the impression that video playback was handled by java. Also way back when i needed to clean a virus. One of the instructions on majorgeeks namely i think read me and run me first said i needed java. Virus is long since gone because i sometimes do a clean reinstall every once in a while. So thats the history and reasons behind why i have java.

    plodr Major Geek Super Extraordinaire

If it were a clean install, Java would not be on the system. Java is not included with Windows 7.

That's not true because I haven't had Java on four Windows 7 computers and yet we watch video all the time.

Are you perhaps restoring an image or backup and Java was installed in the image backup?

I'm trying to find what updates are needed and in what order when you use a Windows 7 DVD. Do you have a Windows 7 DVD (MS) or are you using a factory restore DVD that you made when the computer was new?

With so many years of updates missing, I'm going to send you to another forum where a lot of the volunteers have received commendations from MS and are MSMVPs. They are trained to read and interpret logs they'll have you run; I'm not trained in doing that.

    This is the forum: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/
and this is the section to post update problems: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/forums/windows-update.88/

Post a link to this thread
    https://forums.majorgeeks.com/threa...lowly-failing-to-work-and-now-its-gone.322566
and simply say, here is the background of the problem.

Wouldn't you know it, after I posted the above, I finally stumbled across the Windows 7 install guide I was looking for!
This is how to do a clean install Of Windows 7 and what updates should be done in a particular order.
    https://forums.techguy.org/threads/updated-steps-for-installing-and-updating-windows-7-sp1.1222250/

I'd print it out and perhaps start over because as I understand it, you did a clean install then installed SP1 perhaps in September. You followed this up by trying to do the updates but simply turned on Windows update and they are getting installed in some strange MS order, which doesn't work.

Turn Windows update off or you'll end up in the same situation. You can install the updates by downloading them from the catalog. I've been updating this way ever since MS started bundling lots of updates together in October 2016. In fact, before the bundles, I'd check for updates, wait a few days, read about the problems and then only install those that were critical. We have one computer running Pro and that was always offered updates that the three Win 7 Home computers were not. I looked over the update setting and it had checked recommended updates. I found those were not usually needed.

It is ever thus when you are looking for something that its only after you ask that you find its right in front of you LOL.

I did a clean install of windows when i last wiped my machine which has been a while. I was saying that is what i do sometimes and giving a history of my machine to help understand where i am at. I was trying to update my machine because i thought maybe the lack of updates was what was causing the problems. I am really hoping not to have to do a clean install for a while yet because that would mean a wipe of my pc and my data. Some of which im not sure how to back up.

When you say turn off the updates do you mean turn off auto updates? I never allow windows to auto update. Also by catalog do you mean from a website or can i just select them from the windows update app?

Thank you for the help :)

I mean st it to Never check for updates. If you don't it will start to go out and check, slowing down the computer.
    Win_updates.jpg
Note how in step 1 Frank posted
I mean from the catalog. If you have updates turned off, you will not have anything showing from the update app.
    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx
You type in the KB and you will get a list.

This is the first update to install
    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4490628
You want Windows 7 (Product listing) and be sure you look at the first listing (title) to see if it is x86 or x64.

Frank even posted ALL the download links. Did you not see that in the article I pointed you to?
