Video software question (avi to mpeg)

    *I posted this in the MAC section but I'll try here too.

    Can't seem to play .avi files on my Mac w/quicktime player. Can anyone suggest a simple converter for avi to mpeg video?
    -using mac os 10.3.9 & latest quicktime plyr.
    -downloaded divX & another but nothing worked.
    -quicktime website isn't clear about what to do or download.
    stabbing in the dark, any suggestions?

    you know converting .avi to .mpeg files is quite a long process for a 1.5 hour movie it can take up to 3 hours for converting. i think it's better to find right drivers.
