views on vista and firewalls

First off, most routers have firewalls. Chances are that if you are behind a router that you are protected. Try looking at your router's web interface (if you own it) by typing 192.168.1.1 into a browser and look for firewall.

If you want a software firewall, I like online armor. Comodo is good also I think, just look at what is hot in the Major Geek's firewall page.

 

I used pctools on xp--now comodo--but I keep reading here and there that the vista firewall is "much improved" from xp...I'll be curious myself to see what you do, as I just got my parents--stepdad's 94 years old--a new laptop w/vista, and I'm not that familiar with it, so I'm gonna pick up a cheap--relatively--version of vista on ebay or craigs, or just get the cheapo oem from newegg, so I can learn it better, to help them...and I use a router for the firewall myself...
