If I have 1Gb of RAM, would it hinder my system's performance if I set the Virtual Memory at zero? I do not play any games, other than MG's, and use my system primarily for internet and school work.

    Thanks!

As I understand it, although I can't find any documentary proof, there is no benefit to doing this, and it is likely to cause more problems than it might solve.

If you're REALLY short of disk space, you could try dropping the size of the pagefile and then use the PC for a few days, and watch for any complications. Then drop the size again if you like.

Do you have a particular reason for wanting to disable it, or just 'experimenting'? (which is by far the best way to learn, of course ... ;) )

From what little I know, it seems to me that my system has to go through a great deal of effort, and at a much slower pace than my RAM does, to act like RAM. Since I have so much RAM it seemed like a reasonable conclusion to make that I probably do not ever use all of my RAM so why would I need the Virtual Memory. I have 70Gb of memory so that is not a factor, just trying to make things a little faster and eliminate unneccessary steps.

    Or like you said, experimenting.:)

You're computer won't use the Virtual Memory unless it has to.

With squidzillions of gigs of RAM in your 'pooter, chances are the VM never gets touched, only the much faster RAM is used.

But by all means try it ... :D

experimenting is the spice of life - as long as you can put it back together again afterwards!

Actually, Windows will use virtual memory whether it needs to or not. As well, if XP deems that it needs virtual memory, it will turn it back on anyway.

    I stand corrected.
