I have the virtumonde pest on my HP pent 4 2.4 with 2g ram running xpsp2. Tried all the usual stuff to get rid of but as everyone else seems to know it doesn't work. Finally resorted to a reformat and all was ok till I restored from a windows backup and Virtumond came back! This time however it seems contained as the browsers are still working, I cant use system restore though, the restore points are there but they wont work. As I haven't yet reinstalled everything I have no objections to reformatting again but I need to get rid of this thing from the back up. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
