Virtumonde Problems after Read & Run me

A couple of days ago I noticed that my computer was trying to connect to the internet while I was offline, Spybot S&D and Adaware scans revealed Virtumonde and some redirect host files but did not remove them. I checked Majorgeeks and ran the Read & Run me directions, I still seem to have the problem.

Notes on the Read and Run me process.
While trying to set msconfig to run in normal windows boot mode i recieved the error message: "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes." This I did but received the same message.

After the SAS scan; While SAS was trying to remove the infected files I recieved a message saying that the computer was going to shut down, I saw this at the later end of the count down and so did not see what the error was.

Combofix also restarted my computer, I'm not sure if it was supposed to or not as it was not mentioned on the bleepincomputer page.
Any help sorting out my PC would be received extremely well.
    Thanks in Advance

    1) Please disable teatimer....

    How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

    2) Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: AVG Safe Search - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {3C6301ED-0F78-4AF2-8150-D9C052361A8E} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
    O9 - Extra button: ATLAS Translation - {B7707A72-4355-11D4-82BD-00000EBBEF8D} - C:\Program Files\ATLAS V14\Atlscript.html (file missing)
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: zofemu.dll

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    3) Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it
(make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\imsins.BAK
    c:\windows\iun6002.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\zofemu.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mdxnglwp.ini

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4) Please go to Add and Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

    5) Now Run Ccleaner!

    6) Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

    Thanks
    Kes13!

Okay sorry to be a pest but I have found more problems possibly related to this infection.
Any removable device that i put into my computer at the time now has a folder named resycled and a file called autorun.inf, these cannot be deleted or when they do go, they return within minutes. One of the removable devices has now locked me out so i cannot see the files.

    Thanx again:cry

Another thing I have just noticed is that when I try to click a link from google i get redirected something that starts "http://copy.book..." after that I get some random ISP address i never let the pages load up properly so I'm sorry I can't give you anymore information about the redirections.

also inside the 'resycled' folder is a file called 'boot.com'

Please, please, please help me iwth this

    Hi

    1) Please update both:

    • SUPERantispyware
    • Malware Bytes Anti-Malware

And re-scan with each. Attach the logs they generate.

    2) Please re run Combofix and attach the log it generates.

    3) Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    4) Make sure you have all web browsers closed.

    • Go into Control Panel --> Network Connections.
    • Right click on your connection
    • and click Properties.
    • On the Properties page, highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)
    • Click Properties. This will bring up another page.
    • Select Obtain DNS Server Automatically.
    • Click the ok button. The page will close.
    • Press ok on the page in front of you.
    • Restart the computer.
    • Reconnect to the Internet using Internet Explorer.

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

    Thanks

    Okay...
I ran SAS and MAM, When I tried to run Combofix It started as usual and just as it finished backing up it closed, no log was generated, I was not sure if I should run it again or not so i didn't.
The network conections section was already set to automatically detect the DNS

Here are the three other logs.

    Thanks again

Right I know that i probably should have waited but...rolleyes
I went into safe mode and manually removed all of the boot.com entries from the registry from both accounts on my PC and removed the 'resycled' folders and 'autoplay.inf' files from my removable devices and they don't seem to have reappeared.
While going through my registry i found a lot of strange/inappropriate web addresses under the IE section in the Software key.

Sorry if this means i have wasted your time.
You have been a great help, If i need to post more logs to highlight the changes i will.
Again sorry if this means I have wasted your time.
    Cheers

    Hi

Could you please download a fresh copy of ComboFix, save it to your desktop (overwrite the current version) run it again, and attach the new log once complete.

    Thanks

    Hi

Are you experiencing any more problems at the moment?

If not it's time to do our final steps...

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi,
I don't seem to be having any problems just yet, none of the scans seem to find anything at least, and my P.C. is running as normal.
I do have a couple of files that i'm pretty sure were not there before, (on hard-drive) they are 'boot.bak' and 'cmldr' are these problem files?
Thanks for the help with this it is very much appreciated.

    Hi there :)

In response to the questions you asked:

cmldr relates to the recovery console which was installed before you ran combofix.

boot.bak is just a copy of the boot.ini file, neither of the two are anything to be concerned about.

    Kindest regards
    Kestrel13!
