I was on a website trying to find a serial number for a program so i didn't have to pay for it.. and got this insane virus that I cannot get rid of. I've even ran the tool to get rid of the Trojan.Vundo virus, and even after it finished running and said my system was clean of it, Norton was still giving me notifications that I was infected.

I ran all the things that were required before I post a thread, and it seemed as if things cleared up... until I rebooted my computer. Then the flood gates opened back up again. And so it seems that everytime I restart my computer there is some kind of 'new' problem.

I have been trying to fight with this stuff for several days now, as I usually am relatively successful of getting rid of a virus (on the rare occasion that I get one).

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I will post the logs.

Also note, I am a dialup user, so some of the things that were required to run in safe mode w/ network capability I had to run in normal mode. Additionally I do not have the original bitdefender log as I let it run overnight, and windows automatic update also ran that night and shut down my computer and obviously a log was not saved. I ran it again, to get a log, and nothing was found the second time.

But through it all, I will *never* go looking for the cheap way out ever again. :)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Sorry for the delay. Somehow you slipped by with noone noticing.

First Disable Spybot's TeaTimer as requested in the READ ME
    • Run Spybot and click Mode
    • Select Advanced Mode.
    • Then click Tools and select Resident.
    • Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    • Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    • and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    • Now quit Spybot!

Now uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Also uninstall the CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now.

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
[*]It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
[*]Run HostsXpert.exe, click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
[*]Click the X to exit the program
Continue by downloading a tool we will need

    - Process Explorer

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    cbxxxyv.dll
    eypucgnb.dll
    khfcyxy.dll
    qppukpte.dll
    rvjplmxo.dll
    vtstt.dll
    ympocrwg.dll
    wincqt32.dll
After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    cbxxxyv.dll
    eypucgnb.dll
    khfcyxy.dll
    qppukpte.dll
    rvjplmxo.dll
    vtstt.dll
    ympocrwg.dll
    wincqt32.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    cbxxxyv.dll
    eypucgnb.dll
    khfcyxy.dll
    qppukpte.dll
    rvjplmxo.dll
    vtstt.dll
    ympocrwg.dll
    wincqt32.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Okay. I did not realized that Viewpoint Media and Viewpoint Manager was spyware/malware/whatever, or I would have uninstalled it in step 0 as instructed.

I had a little trouble downloading the latest version of Java from this website. I would get an error message and then it wouldn't load the page. But I went to the Java page itself and verified that I *do* have the most current version of Java all ready installed.

Everything seemed to go pretty well. The only file I could find with the Process Manager tool was the vtstt.dll. And that sucker was tricky. I had to kill it like 3 times cause it kept coming back, but it did eventually go away.

I think I'm clean now. But I've THOUGHT I've been clean many times all ready now. But I'll post the requested files and let you be the judge. :)

    Here's the HJT log.

Oh, one more question. My sister has an account on my computer too, from what Norton has been telling me, the virus has only affected files on my account. Should I also run these same processes on her account too?

And sorry it took so long to respond, I was away for the weekend.

Yes you do already have the current version installed so you are okay. I must have forgotten to edit out that line saying to update. You only needed to uninstall all the old versions.

Almost but not quite finished yet! ;)

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0009-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_09) -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now let's remove some new infected files!

    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

    1. Avenger
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

After we completely finish your cleanup, we can take a look at her account. What I will ask you to do is to make sure you logout of your account (do not use switch users) and then log into her account and run the below:

    • run CCleaner
    • scan with Spybot and fix all that it finds
    • attach a log from GetRunKey
    • attach a log from ShowNew
    • attach a HijackThis log
You don't need to run anything else.

Okay. Now that I've done all that wonderful stuff, here's the logs. :)

    Now what?

Looks good! Now logout and then do the stuff I asked for on your sisters account.

Apparently ShowNew and GetRunKey only work on an administrator account. I wasn't sure if you knew that or not, but if others complain of issues (a lot of error messages) in the future, it is most likely because that user has a limited account on Win XP.

Here are the logs you asked for. :)

Yes thanks we know this. There is even a note in the READ ME about problems with restricted/limited user accounts.

These logs are clean. Just have HJT fix the below lines:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)

Then you can set your sister's account back to a limiter user account.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Super! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Apparently my other malware issues cleared up once we were able to get rid of the virus.

I cannot thank you enough! I am thrilled to see my machine into a normal state of health again.
