    Hey everyone:

Several months ago I posted because I was having issues with removing the Virutmonde virus, and now my mother-in-law is having the same problem on hers. She has all the classic symptoms of this virus, and it has even completely disabled her Symantec anti-virus program (ie, doesn't start at start up, and system scans are disabled). You guys were so helpful last time, I figured I would call on you again. :)

I would really like to have this fixed by Friday if possible because I will be leaving town, and I know she doesn't have the means of picking up where I left off.

I've read all the instructions on cleaning before posting -- but I know Vundo cannot be fixed by cleaners. I'll attach the files anyways. the AVG file will be attached as soon as the scan is done.

You appear to have some signs of one of the newest forms of Vundo.

Please do the below where I will ask for another tool to be run which is necessary due to your infection.

    • Download and save to RenV.exe from following link to Desktop (must be on the Desktop)
    • Doubleclick RenV.exe
      • When finished, it will produce a new log named Log.txt on the Desktop.
      • Attach this log to your next reply.
    • Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.
    • Now run the C:\MGtools\VunFind.bat file by double clicking on it and be patient while it scans your whole hard disk.
Then attach the below new logs:
    • log.txt file created by RenV
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

here's the MGlogs.zip file. The VunFix.exe ran for about 10 seconds, then produced a report, is that normal?

I ran the RenV.exe file, and waited like 15 minutes for it to finish and create a log file...I'm still waiting. Am I just not waiting long enough?

Sometimes! But note, it is VunFind.bat not VunFix.exe. VunFind.bat does not fix anything. It is an information collector.

I'm not sure happened with this. It's possible that your antivirus was interferring with it. Don't worry about it now.

Start by uninstall Viewpoint Media Player as requested in the READ ME.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

    • Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.
    • Now run the C:\MGtools\VunFind.bat file by double clicking on it and be patient while it scans your whole hard disk.
Then attach the below new logs:
    • Avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Also make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    How did you miss this?

    Good question! I don't know! :)

Everything appears to be working fine, but the antivirus software is still "disabled" (if that's what you want to call it). It opens up if I click on it manually, but if I try to run a virus scan I get an error message. I took a screen shot of what is going on for you to see.

I never got this error message before until this Vundo thing.

Also note: the icon for the antivirus software does not show up next to the clock, and even if I wait a few minutes for the software to "initialize" that message is all I ever get.

If you wish to keep TrendMicro, you could try uninstalling all of it. The reboot. After reboot try reinstalling and see if it works okay.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
