virus and malware trouble

    had an influx of viruses and malware when installing something from a torrent yesterday. partially my fault letting them through the firewall... i didn't really think at the time and let enough of it through.

    my dns settings had been changed, i was getting re-directed to different sites and had multiple other problems. sbs&d found several infections but didn't fix much. avg anti virus was sucking as much cpu as it could, capping cpu usage at 100% constantly (which i've never seen before). the sticky about preventing malware here mentioned performance issues so i tried switching to avast. sdra64.exe (Zbot) seemed to be causing trouble (along with others) and while working my way through the malware removal sticky here, malwarebytes seemed to sort that problem out.

    i moved onto combofix and everything seemed to go fine until after it finished installing the microsoft recovery console. i got a bsod caused by mbr.sys: "driver_unloaded_without_cancelling_pending_operations". i restarted the computer and now i get bsods just as it brings up the windows logo as it loads up windows. these ones say:
    i've run chkdsk (and then chkdsk /p... it said chkdsk /f was an invalid command) and it didn't find any problems.

    tried running the recovery console... noticed one of the commands is "fixmbr" (mbr.sys being mentioned in a bsod earlier). it's warning me not to proceed though:
    so i left fixmbr for the time being and restarted to try using the 'last known good configuration'.

    i left the anti-malware tools for a little to see if it was better and managed to do a little video editing and played a little on a java game (puzzle pirates, nothing dodgy and virus infested) but the laptop is generally a lot slower and behaving odd. avast gave me a warning that
    win32:malware-gen under the guise of svchost.exe was healed. i went back to combofix to give it another go but this time it gave me a bsod mentioning "khips.sys - address b4d4b75b base at b4d49000 datestamp 4624d391" around the point it was making a restore point. the 3rd time i tried it got a little further and then gave the error telling me to run chkdsk /f again and i had to run the last known good configuration again.

    i now have active desktop recovery as my background and trying to restore gives the message:
    neither yes nor no buttons do anything.
    after googling this error i deleted this file so windows would replace it with a new version but it didn't seem to do anything.

    at this point i went ahead and ran RR and MGT. no combo log is available.

    i have photos of all the blue screens if you need any more info on what they said.

    hope you can help. :)

    From your logs, it looks like the scans took care of most of it.

    Please Disable Spybot's TeaTimer --> Should have been done as per the R&R instructions!

    * Run Spybot and click Mode
    * Select Advanced Mode.
    * Then click Tools and select Resident.
    * Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    * Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    * and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    * Now quit Spybot!

    I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove everything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and definitely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

    However, use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\21.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\BVGF.TMP
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\hwod.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\lgek.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\OSEC.TMP
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\tdhd.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Marcus Evans\Local Settings\Temp\a.dat

    Have you tried renaming ComboFix? You could try renaming to svchost.exe and then see if it will run.

    If it doesnt, please run this: GMER - running with a random name and attach the log from GMER.

    deleted those files... renamed combofix.exe to cf.exe. had the mbr.sys bsod during the first scan again. had to 'restore last known good configuration' again. re-read your post and realised i had missed that you said i should try renaming to svchost.exe. i did this and just before the blue window comes up for the first time... it automatically re-names back to ComboFix.exe. if i leave it to continue it goes and does the same bsod. it doesn't do this when i rename to other random names. weird. anyways... the gmer log is attached.

    You didnt attach anything, and are you saying that Combo will run?

    oops, sorry. should be attached now.

    no. combofix seems to make my computer bsod whatever the name is. just thought it was weird how it auto-renamed itself back to ComboFix.exe when it was named to svchost.exe, but not when it was called anything else.

    Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

    Download Mirror #1

    Download Mirror #2

    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it. (If you are using Vista, please right-click and select run as administartor)
    • A blank Windows shall open with the title "SystemLook v1.0-by Jpshortstuff".
    • Copy and Paste the content of the following codebox into the main textfield under "File":

    Code:
    :filefind
    atapi.sys
    tcpip.sys
    • Please Confirm everything is copied and Pasted as I have provided above
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. You can close this notepad window as the log will already be saved as SystemLook.txt on your Desktop ( if you downloaded and ran SystemLook to your Desktop as requested ).
    • Please attach this log in your next reply.

    Note: The scan may take a while from several seconds to a minute or more depending on the number of files you have and how fast your computer can perform the task.

    This is a new form of TDSS rootkit. So we are trying new things to fix this.

    Please download a fresh copy of ComboFix to your desktop. Do not run it yet.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    FCopy::
    C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB951748\SP3GDR\tcpip.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\tcpip.sys

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    interesting to see malware this new and how much of a pain in the *** it is, haha. i think you need to change your wording though. you can't know there is an update to download for combofix till you have run it, but you say not to run it till you have the text file to drag in. if it does need to update, it restarts combofix after and gives a blue screen (mbr.sys) as usual. if combofix self updates, people need to stop it restarting and then drag the text file in again instead.

    anyways... those seemed to run correctly. there isn't a combofix.txt on the desktop after running both of those though. i'm not sure now if it made one or not because there's one in the MGlogs.rar. is that right, or should i run them again?

    Looks like that worked. Your logs are clean.

    Usually Combo will not need to update unless you have had it on your desktop for a while. Thus, we rarely have that occur when running a fix.

    Are you still having any malware issues?

    fair enough. i did think it was odd as i had downloaded a new version of combofix to my desktop as you said and it still needed updating.

    i haven't noticed any malware since that last step. hopefully that has done it all then! if anything does pop up soon i'll let you know. thank you very much for your help. keep up the good work here! :)

    Good to know and you are most welcome.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
