Virus attempting outbound connections

    Hi,

I have an infection across several Server2003 based servers which is proving hard to remove.

It was also infecting desktop machines but Combofix sorted those out - but of course Combofix won't run on the server OS.

Symantec Endpoint identifies it as "Trojan.gen" and shows the infection in "C:\WINDOWS\Offline Web Pages\cache.txt" but is only able to quarantine and not remove the threat which just pops back up.

None of the other usual software is able to even see it - tried MBAM and Spybot.

It is currently attempting to connect to external IP addresses on every available port and so the servers have had all external access removed although I am able to monitor its activity via Syslog if necessary.

ANy suggestions would be appreciated although there may be delays for anything requiring reboots as these are production servers.

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum.

Follow these instructions, obviously skipping the Combofix step. :)

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Log files attached.

No Combofix or RoorRepeal due to OS in use being Server 2003.

Let me know what else is needed.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.FOREMANSLLP\Application Data\SMRResults210.dat <--- delete this file if you do not know what it is.

Could you please get this: cache.txt into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

If this method of zipping up fails then please try to navigate to the file and zip it up for me yourself?

cache.txt zipped and attached. Thats the file that Symantec is identifying and quarantining.

    SMRResults210.dat is now deleted.

So what happens if you delete it?

    C:\WINDOWS\Offline Web Pages\cache.txt

Does Symantec Endpoint stop complaining? Do you still experience unusual behaviour?

Via Windows I am unable to see the files within the folder.

From a DOS prompt I can see the following :

    cache.txt
    MainThread.txt
    ThreadProtect.txt
    1.60_0823 without an extension

And running a DEL command appears to delete them (in that there are no error messages) but a further DIR shows that they are still there.

Running ATTRIB on the directory also shows a desktop.ini which has a H attribute set and the remaining files have the A attribute set.

    Not much......

Via Windows I am unable to see the files within the folder even with the option enabled to view hidden and system files.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:
    :files
    C:\WINDOWS\Offline Web Pages\cache.txt

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into notepad, save it as something appropriate and attach it into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

    Now how are things running?

OK. Having run OTM I need to wait until after 5:30 to do the next step as a reboot is required and this is a live server (in fact its one of two DC's) and so can't be rebooted during office hours.

I'll reboot and post results in about 45 minutes.

That's fine. I was trying to avoid the reboot, but there ya go. I am due in at work in about an hour and will be away for a few hours. I will log in again later on, but it may be that I need assistance from one of my colleagues with your problem. So your patience is appreciated. :) Thanks.

No rush - once I've confirmed that everything has come back up and posted the log file I'll be leaving for the night and won't have access to the server until about 8am GMT so if there are people with more pressing cases who can actually respond then I'm sure they'll appreciate it :)

Your case is just as pressing as the next. ;) Soon as you get the chance to attach the log and let me know how things are behaving, depending on your response, we can either wrap up, or investigate further.

Well OTM runs but says it can't create a log file.

After reboot the cache.txt file is still there.

I have the option of booting from a live CD and removing the files outside of Windows running if necessary ?

Try that and let me know how it goes.

OK. Having deleted the cache.txt file (changing it's attributes allows it to be displayed and deleted from Windows) it immediately recreates itself.

I suspect that the file "1.60_0823" is the actual virus as it is can not be deleted as it is in use.

As a follow on to the last post, using a freeware file unlock app, I was able to identify an instance of svchost.exe that was running the "1.60_0823" file and once that was killed I was able to delete the file. After doing this cache.txt was deleted and has not reappeared.

I've restored the servers gateway address to the correct IP address and it is now servicing DNS requests but not attempting to port scan so it would appear that the virus has been removed although I'll reserve judgement until I am able to reboot and check that it does not reinfect itself.

Good. Let us know how things are running when you get chance.
