    Hi,

I have a laptop running Windows XP SP2. The cursor has a mind of its own and won't allow entry of the login password. I have tried resetting the password using Sysinternal ERD Locksmith with no luck. I then tried to re-install XP and the laptop produced the equivalent of morse code beeps in a random pattern for about 5 mins. Now the laptop won't boot from the CD. Does anyone know which malware exhibits these symptons. I think I will just get a new hard drive to sort this one but would love to know what I was up against.

    Cheers

It actually sounds more like a hardware failure of some type especially since now you imply the CD drive is not working. You may want to check BIOS setttings. Also does it work better in safe boot mode?

You would have been better off posting this in the Software or Hardware Forums to see if anyone has heard of something like this.

    Hi Chasling,

I should have said that I have:
    1. Booted XP in Safe Mode and the cursor still does it's own thing. Can't enter commands at the command prompt as a result.
    2. Ran Recovery Console from the XP CD. Ran chkdsk /p and it didn't work.
    3. Booted to ERD and tried to change password to aaaaaaaa to allow login in normal mode. That didn't work.
    4. Booted from the XP CD and ran the repair option. The repair wasn't successful. During the file copy stage all files failed to copy and I exited the repair.

The CD ROM Drive works as the PC booted to Recovery Console initially. Following the repair it now doesn't boot from the CD. It does however boot normally to the login screen and boots into Safe Mode. Does this sound like the symptoms of any virus you've come across?

    Thanks

No! It sounds more like hardware or software issues which is why I recommended the other forums.
