virus + dumb friend = limited or no connectivity

E-machine 32bit wired desktop ('05 I know very old) running XP. (Also have two netbooks that wirelessly connect fine which is how I'm posting).

So I had a virus. I had most of the symptoms of MS Antivirus: changed desktop to mimic BSOD, blocked access to my antivirus applications and hijacked internet usage including popups and redirects.

Well at the time I was getting nowhere with my skills (which have improved in the last 6 months of trying to work on this thing) so I asked a friend from work to come take a look. I'm not sure every step he took but I know a few of the things he did which included running Comodo and changing MSconfig, and Malwarebytes might have been there too.

I'm not sure if my system ever fully got rid of the infection so I'm not sure I'm posting in the right place, but after the friend got done I had no internet access, even though I did when he started, and I couldn't access any folders in Control Panel. Shortly after that I moved. I switched from DSL to Cable. And I have been slowly trying to get this machine back online.
I called the cable provider and my modem is fine, called my router manufacturer and the router is fine. I updated my ethernet driver, and have gone around and around with ipconfig /renew with the message "Unable to contact your DHCP server." I've tried to manually configure the ip address and I've tried the Netsh command. Thought it could be the firewall, disabled that and nothing. I've tried several diagnostic programs and then I found this website/forum. I have followed the Read Me to the letter and am attaching my logs. Any help would be appreciated, I will be very cooperative and patient. Thanks

We do not ask for a HJT log, but rather the log from running MGTools.exe --> C:\MGlogs.zip.

You are way out of date with your copy of MGtools. You need to download and use the current version given in the READ & RUN ME and attach a new log.

Also check to see if yur connection issue is related to a proxy setting. See below:

    Proxy Server - Changing Settings

Gotcha on the outdated file. Attached new one. Tried the proxy settings on firefox and IE, no dice. I'm getting a "error renewing your IP address" message. Hope that helps.

Your logs are clean. This is not a malware issue, so I suggest you post in the networking forum for additional assistance.

One of your biggest problems is this:
    Code:
    Total Physical Memory 256.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 53.67 MB
We can clean up a few things:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Have you tried going into SAS and click on preferences / repairs / and scroll down to Repair network connection?

Have you tried obtaining an IP address by plugging directly into the modem?

Since you are not having any malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I hear you on the memory. Once I can get this machine working right one or two gigs is my next step. Thanks for the cleanup, I did get the registry success message, and I am glad to hear I am free of malware. No go on the SAS winsock ap. And as for plugging directly into the modem, I don't have the right cable for that (may be purchasing that soon). I am following up on all the loose ends as far as finishing the final steps next then it's off to the networking forum for me. Thanks for all your help.

You do normally need to directly connect to the modem first to acquire your ip address before you can switch over to wifi from your router. Good luck and safe surfing. :)

I think I found a cord to connect to my modem, but it's usb not ethernet. I am wired to my router via ethernet, not trying to be wireless on this machine. I posted in the networking forum on 6-2, how long should it take for a response? I haven't gotten one yet (posted in new thread: "limited / no connectivity unable to renew ip address").
