i belong to a support group. the administrator has a virus in her address book that sends a virus to everybody on it. last week i tried to open the attachment and yahoo refused saying it had the virus 'netsky' (if i remember correctly). this week i simply deleted it without looking. she sez she never sends email from her own address only the site one, but all the members are on her puter. what does she have to do? PS i don't know if this is the right board for this question so bear with me. aloha

Download this stinger tool from mcafee and run it on the infected computer. this takes care of most of the recent viruses

ok....thing i don't understand is how does it scan your address book if its in your email account. are you supposed to open your email account and address book first? sorry if that sounds dense. i download it and ran it first...it found no viruses in my c/: whatever. was i supposed to be expanding that search somehow. i wanted to 'test it' before passing it on to my administrator friend, so she would have all the details. aloha

I think there is a simple misunderstanding of how this works. Many trojans and viruses are written to get emails from an address book. It then takes those names and goes to another address book and so on and so forth, this is how they spread so rapidly. These emails can be attachments and often times can look legitimate to someone less savvy.

As Zyto said, try Stinger, but more importantly, make sure anti virus is installed and up to date as well as Windows Update.

(Zyto, please link to us for files that we have in the future. Thanks!)

My appologies I was unaware it was here. I was just using my tools I have for me at work. I just started here yesterday. Came to ask a question, and decided to lend a hand in answering and I kinda got sucked in :-Þ

Not a problem at all, hope you didnt take it otherwise! I noted a few responses from you that seem pretty dead on, so figured you might help out more, so if you do, we appreciate the links within when possible :)
