    Hello AntiV gurus,

My friend arrived with his computer saying everytime I try to go to a webpage it takes me to some search site. Ummm can we say hijack?..lol.

So I ran Malwarebytes to see what we had.. 1300 pups. Sheesh. Then I see the smarthelper bar installed. Soooo, I thought I'd get some logs and send em on up to you folks for assistance to be sure all nefarious viri are removed.

Thanks for being there to help.

There are three Malwarebyte logs, as I say, I ran that first assuming it would be a quick fix. I am giving you all three logs, hope that is useful.

    Hi there.

Are you deliberately set up to use a proxy on this machine?

No, I think it is part of the hijack.

Software Updater version 1.8.4 <<< Uninstall this.

    http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9659/rktigzy.gif Fix items using RogueKiller.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7/8 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Registry tab and locate these 3 detections:

    • [PROXY IE][PUM] HKCU\[...]\Internet Settings : ProxyServer (hxxp=127.0.0.1:49169;hxxps=127.0.0.1:49169 [Country: , City: ]) -> FOUND
    • [PROXY IE][PUM] HKCU\[...]\Internet Settings : ProxyEnable (1) -> FOUND

Place a checkmark next to each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • O4 - Global Startup: SoftwareUpdater.lnk = C:\Program Files (x86)\Software Updater\SoftwareUpdater.exe
    • O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\PROGRA~2\SearchProtect\SearchProtect\bin\SPVC32Loader.dll
NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:
    :Files
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Software Updater
    C:\PROGRA~2\SearchProtect
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Software Updater
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\SoftwareUpdater.lnk

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=""
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{006ee092-9658-4fd6-bd8e-a21a348e59f5}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{006ee092-9658-4fd6-bd8e-a21a348e59f5}]

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into a text file to ATTACH into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.

    • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
    • Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator
    • Click on the Scan button.
    • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
    • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
    • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
    • Attach the logfile to your next next reply.
    • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Next re run RogueKiller again, just a scan, and attach log.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

OK, let's try again. If this doesn't work, there are other methods to try, but to begin...

Re run RogueKiller and have it fix these on the proxy tab: (I think I incorrectly said registry tab earlier. Sorry.)
Now rescan with RogueKiller again after reboot and attach new log.

    hi kestrel,

I uploaded the requested log a few days ago. I did notice the proxy remained in place even after the second deletion attempt. So something is buried elsewhere. Next steps?

    much thanks,

    dkgoodwin

    Hi there :)

I don't want logs from days ago. I want one from today.

Can you just do what I said above about rescanning with RK, hitting the entry on the proxy tab, removing it, and then rescanning again please. Thanks.

What I meant was that I did put up the new log. I did what you asked and uploaded the file a few days ago, I hadn't heard anything and wanted to check in.

It says it is deleting the proxy and then it reappears.

Rerunning RK again and uploading the log.

On the rerun RK replies cannot delete use proxyfix.

    thanks

And that log was an OLD one. ;) It was me who did not hear from you for a few days, not the other way around. (From 26th til 29th)

The proxy no longer shows in the log you attached, so whatever RK claimed about not being able to delete it... it's gone. Does it show when you rescan at all? :confused

Thank you for helping Kestrel. I am not getting notifications when you are responding. Not wanting to bug you, I wait.

Looks like the proxy problem is gone. I appreciate your help.

    regards,

Testing system I find the both IE and FFox are running youtube videos at triple speed. One of the troubles was a "free" converter file. So I am guessing it caused a problem at some point.

Also some redirect is still going on.

I also see the "shopping helper smartbar" still in control panel. Disable doesn't do anything.

    Please advise.

I'll not rely on the email notification and will check back frequently so we don't have delayed communication.

    thanks,

Uninstall it using Revo Uninstaller. And the same for this:
    • Search Protect

Sorry to hear you're having troubles with that.

    Most welcome!

Once you have uninstalled those, do this:

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know how things are running.

Thank you so much. I did as advised. Didn't see search project in the programs. However I was able to remove all the "shopping helper" garbage.

    Attaching the mglogs.zip file.

Looks to be a done deal. Yay.

I just changed youtube to html5 player and that got the other problem resolved too.

Thank you very much. The folks whose computer this is, are coming by on their way home and will be able to pick it up. double yay!

    Excellent! :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
