Hi. I am nearly through the Read & Run me First procedures. However, Root Repeal has been running for nearly 2 days and has yet to complete. It looks like it is scanning different files/folders, but it never stops! :) And in the "Status" bar (for every file scanned) it says "Locked to the Windows API!"

Should I go ahead and stop this program and move on to MGTools?

Thanks! Once I hear from someone I will post the logs and wait for instructions.

Ok...since my post yesterday, I ran some windows updates that popped up and then started the "Read & Run Me First" scans all over again

(before posting here the first time, I tried using the recovery portion of the hard drive to take the computer back to factory settings. Unfortunately the recovery portion must have been infected, too, because it's still not working correctly)

So...here are the logs. Everything ran much quicker this time, with the exception again of Root Repeal. When I woke up this morning, I had the following:

    Root Repeal Error
"Attempt to read from address 0x02421038"

I had to reboot twice after that. The first time, windows wouldn't even start.

Other than that, things went fairly quickly.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

    Diane

PS...I'm getting a message that the combofix log is too big to attach. I'll try attaching it in a separate message.

What issues are you having as I am not seeing any malware in your system.

Well...that sounds like good news! Before I did the restore, I think we had the rogue antivirus (I think that's what it's called) We kept getting dozens of popup messages telling us that 'such and such' program was infected. Things in general weren't running correctly either.

I bought Malwarebytes and ZA Extreme Security and ran those. MWB found the rogue and a couple trojans (don't remember the names).

After quarantining those, the computer still acting a little wonky, so I did the restore. Then other night we tried to install itunes and the installer would stop in the middle and close. So I tried to save it and then install and that wouldn't work either. Got me to wondering whether I had gotten the machine clean or not...

So...I ran most of the way thru the Read And Run Me First - until Root Repeal wouldn't stop running. After rebooting, windows ran some updates and then I started the process over again. Those logs are the ones I sent you in this thread.

My assumption was that we didn't get rid of all the nasties... But if you're saying it's clean, maybe I should just see how it goes? Unless you have any other scans you think I should run.

thanks so much for your help!

    Diane

You are probably just dealing with a software issue at this point, but if you would like to double check, you can run this:

    Using BitDefender Online Scan.

BitDefender scan did not find anything, so I think we're good to go.

    Thank you so much!

You are most welcome. Safe surfing.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
