Hi. I read the removal guide, but whatever I have makes it difficult to follow those steps.

    Here's what happened.
Things were slow & locking up. Tried to open an excel doc & it wouldn't open & it said it was unrecoverable or something like that. Noticed the "updates needed" icon on the bottom of my screen. Clicked that & it said I must shut down which I did & then there were like 4 updates that Windows said it was downloading.

Here's what happens now starting with computer off:
    1. It takes about 5 or 10 minutes just to turn it on; sometimes it won't come on at all so I have to press the restart button until it works.
    2. Once on no matter what I click on it takes 5 or 10 minutes for it to respond. Some things never respond.
    3. Tried system restore (took about an hour to get thru the steps) and it got to the point where it said "Windows shutting down" but it wouldn't shut down, so I did it manually.
    4. Tried running Malwarebytes, but it was extremely slow & when I came back from work it had shut down.
    5. Tried Spybot, but it locks up after 10 minutes or so.
    6. Tried running my windows cd, but it won't run.
    7. Microsoft Security Essentials flashes messages that my computer is no longer protected, no firewall active, etc. I tried reactivating, but no luck.

    What do I do???

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything. Note if you cannot save things in C:\ then just save them to your Desktop. Make sure that you have disable UAC and rebooted first if you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!

    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:

Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I can't really use the removal guide because my computer is too screwed up. Just to get the computer to turn on is a major achievement. Anything I click on takes 10 minutes to open & then even if I do get thru the steps of clicking stuff whatever I try to run just locks up or shuts down.

If I have to reinstall windows how to I do it? I can't get the windows cd to run. I have no option to boot into safe mode. I have no option to go into my bios. I can't run programs. Nothing works.

Am I going to need to buy a new hard drive & just start over?

If you can't run any of the procedures, due to it locking up or shutting down, there isn't much we can help you with as far as malware removal is concerned. You can try creating this disc, but if your CD device is not working and you can't get into the bios, it isn't going to help.

I suggest that you post in the software forum for additional assistance.

Have you tried booting in safe mode to see if anything can be done?

Also what about running MSconfig and selecting Diagnostic Startup?

What version of Windows is this?
