Has anyone heard of a virus or trojan called "Bal"? My firewa;;/antivirus said it had blocked something called "Bal"!?

    Thanks!

Which is it... the firewall or the antivirus? And give the full name. If it is the firewall it should be telling you a process name and normally would give full path information. Is it something like c:\windows\system32\bal.exe ?

By the "full name" do you mean the firewall/antivirus pgm? The antivirus/firewall pgms are Nortons' 2005 programs (I don't remember which reported it, only that a box popped up saying that it had blocked something called "Bal"). I remember it happening one other time when I had done the Ad-Aware search on my pc and it said it had found something called "Bal". I've bought a new pc since then after the old one crashed because of a bad hard drive and CPU, so I had to re-install all my OS, etc. on the new pc.

I've done some searches via internet ... went onto Nortons site and McAfee's, will try Ad-Aware's next to see what I can find there.

    Thanks for any info,

    I was asking two questions:
    1) Which program said it found "Bal"? Was it the firewall or the antivirus?

    2) And by full path I was referring to the the problem? Normall a firewall or an antivirus will give you more information as to where the problem is. If it is a file, you can usually get full path info like I said in my last message as an example: c:\windows\system32\bal.exe This is just a possible example. I don't know what you are getting or where it is. But just saying "Bal" is not enough information. Was it "Backdoor-Bal"?

You did not really indicate that you are having any real problems right now.
If you think you have a malware problem, you should follow our standard cleanup procedures which I added below.

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal
If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99.1 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT
