    About a week ago, my computer showed signs of a virus. Specifically, when I tried opening various applications (e.g., Microsoft Outlook, Internet Explorer), I would get a series of Bad Image error messages, that said that the application could not find a non-existent .dll. When I ran HijackThis, I saw a file called ufnkokn.dll that I couldn't get rid of myself, and when I right clicked on the file, I saw a reference to SMVERI32.dll, but I couldn't get rid of the problem. Then I ran across your site.

    I have run through all of your steps and run the programs you suggested. They appeared to have eliminated a number of problems, and the error messages no longer appear. However, ufnkokn.dll remains, and I still can't delete it.

    I have attached three of the log files. Unfortunately, I can no longer find the SuperAntiSpyware log (nothing appears under the Statistics/Log Tab), but will post it if I can track it down. I can also re-run that scan if you'd like.

    Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the "Input script here:"
    part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

    Be sure to tell us how things are running.

    Thank you so much for the prompt and helpful response. I no longer see any sign of the virus in the operation of the computer. However, the ufnkokn.dll file is still there; I just can't seem to get rid of it.

    Although the computer seems to be running fine, I suspect that if I don't get rid of that file, problems will return. So any additional help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I have attached the log files you have requested; hopefully they will be of some help. I should add that the Avenger log was from the second time I ran it; I ran it the first time as local user, and the second time as the administrator, as I was under the impression that attacking the problem in administrator mode might be more effective.

    Thanks again.

    None of what I wanted done worked. That usually means you are running some protection software that is blocking the fixes.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    o If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\s1po.6
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wgrpxuu.dll
    c:\windows\system32\ufnkokn.dll

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{D6050669-5E0A-4ADE-80E2-3C49047258E3}]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{F8F9D988-7A2B-40C7-AF14-B21586F4AF64}]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combo.

    Thanks. I was unable to disable Trend Micro Office Scan when I was logged in as a user, because I need a password that I don't have (this is a work computer), so I ran the programs in Safe Mode. It cleaned out some more junk, but it looks like the ufnkokn.dll file is still there.

    I have attached two ComboFix logs (the first time I ran it I forgot to put it back into safe mode after the program restarted itself, so I ran it a second time where it was in same mode the entire time). I have also attached the MGlogs.zip file, which was created in safe mode after I ran ComboFix the second time. Any further help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again.

    You are not going to be able to clean this machine as long as you are unable to disable both Trend Micro and SafeGuard Easy. :(

    I suggest you contact your IT person so that we can continue.
