This is a fun one, Vista Home Premium on a Presario CQ50

Usually I'm pretty savvy at removing this crap...but this particular item has got me stumped. One of my users gave me their personal laptop to take a look at, and it's completely screwed. She doesn't have the install disc, no startup options will help me and every time the laptop is booted and is then logged in, there is this Virus Proector "software" that pops up and starts a scan before explorer loads. Task Manager is not available, only thing I can do is log off and log back on/switch users. Nothing else works. I can't get to the task bar, Win+*.* doesn't work...I'm at a loss.

Anyone have any suggestions besides a repave?

    Thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
There are many other similar type CDs and also possibly options with Linux boot CDs.

Thanks for the Avira link. I can reboot into safe mode CMD, but it doesn't recognize the optical or usb drives.

I will run Avira and report back. Thank you for your time :)

Okay but there are other things you can do. Example, you can run MSConfig and disable various Startups and Services that could be related to malware or even disable all Startups ( DO NOT disable all services). You may find a that this will allow you to then boot into normal mode so that you can do some steps from within Windows.

Similarly, you can run the Windows Registry Editor to do manual registry editing as necessary. MSconfig will make it unnecessary to use Regedit for manually disabling startups but the registry editor still could be used for other things if you no what to look.

You may even be able to kick off a System Restore from safe boot mode with command prompt...... that is if it is necessary.
