I am new here and did a search by the name above before I wanted to post a repeat! I didn't come up with anything, so here goes.
My husband got a new computer and before we put in his virus software he got a pop up about having a potential virus....the icon looked just like a windows defender logo in the tray. So of course he ran it, not realizing it was an advertisement of some sort, and he's now got this moronic "alert" thing over and over telling him of security problems
I installed Trend Micro (it's a Dell ispiron 1525) and it saw and quaranteened this guy, but it's still comig up, just now trend micro stops the web page from loading. On the start button when you click "all programs" you see Virus Remover 2008, but it says the folder is empty. (He tried uninstall it.) The alert still won't leave us alone and keeps trying to open a web page which is being blocked and idetified as "Dangerous" by Trend Micro. I then ran spybot and it saw that and smitfraud-c, but can't remove the virus remover 2008.
Any suggestions would help. I'm computer comfortable but not overly geeked out yet! Working on it!
    Thanks,
    SheDrum

And ideas on how to get rid of it?

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
