NO one scanner finds EVERY problem, so there is no simple answer to your question. If your system is infected, read this thread:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=38752

and follow the instructions there EXACTLY, so you can begin to clean your system. If you use Internet Explorer for browsing the web, you should be prepared to be REinfected, because it will happen frequently.

I get the impression you would like a simple "one-click" solution to your problems; no such animal exists.

Malware Killer: I think you got the wrong link... Did you mean to post the HJT tutorial? or this:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

cybersurfer: If you suspect malware then:

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

      • [*]runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
        [*]newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • HijackThis

NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

When you return to post the logs please start a new thread in the malware forum and attach the logs there someone will look at them and advise you if needed.

    matt.chugg:

You hit the nail on the head; I THOUGHT I copied the right link, but didn't double-check it before I posted. Thanks for catching that, and posting the correct link here. Hopefully, at least ONE of us will get cybersurfer pointed in the right direction with this, and it looks like that will be YOU! :D

Thanks again for posting the PROPER link... MK

No problem. It happens to me all the time.

Unfortunatly I also have to disagree with your initial post. ;) (sorry lol)

I agree there are a couple of security issues with Internet Explorer, however it should not be blamed for all infections. We get users in the malware forum who use FireFox or other browsers as the default browser yet they still end up here with massive infections. From your ID I will assume you know something about malware so I shouldn't need to point out that the first and last line of defence against malware is the user. Personally I use IE all the time, I only have FF, Flock, Maxthon and Opera installed for web application debugging. By using the tools we reccomend here (Firewalls, AV, AS etc) in conjunction with safe browsing traits I personally feel that my chances of infection are pretty slim regardless of what browser I use. Of course even the best of us get malware ocasionally due to it ever evolving nature.

I'm not having a rant (don't get me wrong) I just sometimes feel that educating the user would be more help than just blaming a browser.

Hopefully you will understand what I am saying and not take this the wrong way ;)

I am a bit confused at this point as to what I should be downloading for Virus & Spyware Protection, and something that can do removeal if I am infected. trying to keep up, but hey, I am a newbee, but so willing to learn if someone would help me.
I greatly appreciate any input or suggestions. I am challenged, so need step by step instructions. Good at following those. ;-)

    Hi Kitti

A good guide to follow is this one How to Protect yourself from malware! it also highlights some of the great free software you can download to protect your PC.

Basics are only have 1 Antivirus and Firewall program installed, also only have 1 live scanning malware/spyware application installed but you can have a few of the on-demand scans installed at the same time.

just as an example I will list what I have installed but its not a definative guide to what you should have as many others have various applications they prefer these are just mine.

Avast Free ( for Antivirus )
    ZoneAlarm ( for Firewall )
Microsoft Defender ( for Malware/spyware ) *live scanning

none running or on-demand scanners for malware
    Spywareblaster
    Ad-Aware SE
    A-Squared Free

and if you are infected then I would advise that you run through this guide and then post a new thread in the Malware forum with the logs requested READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
