    Hey experts,

    I have something wrong with my PC. It started with not being able to open the control panel. That would cause explorer to crash. The recommended Antivirus and spyware programs will also start but crash shortly after. I've run kaspersky boot disk and removed several virus' but this one still remains. I've noticed that when explorer crashes the ACL is changed. I can change it back and run explorer again as long as I don't run the control panel. Running the control cpls will work just not control.exe by itself. Likewise the same thing happens when I run Malwarebytes, superantispyware, and Spybot. I've attached my mgtools log. HJT won't run either.

    Thanks
    Eddy

    Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode

    c:\eddy\combofix.exe <--- Needs to be run directly from your desktop not here where you have it.

    Uninstall the below outdated Java

    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 17
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    • Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    rk_remover-boot
    DirLook::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\987174
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MSLGFRGS
    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\rk_remover.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tmp.reg
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tmp.txt
    Folder::
    c:\program files\Ascentive
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\ZoneLabsFirewall]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\rk_remover-boot]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now at this point give Malware Bytes and SUPERantispyware a run if you can, fix all they find and attach the logs that each create.

    Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now double click the C:\MGTools.exe and this time ensure you accept when the agreement for the Trend Micro Hijackthis pops up.

    Attach the C:\Mglogs.zip into your next response.

    What are you using for anti virus??

    Tell me... how are things running now?

    Thanks Kestrel13! I didn't see this post before I tried the bitdefender recovery cd. It removed the issue. I've got Security Essential running as the AV now and the firewall is back up and running.

    One note I was in normal mode so it's interesting the mglogs did not show me in normal mode.

    Not seeing much to do now:

    If you did not deliberately set this proxy yourself then please include it in the HJT fix below:

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    You must tell me how things are running! :)
