    hi

i've been away for a while but i have a new problem. i'm running windows xp with all the svc packs and updates. i have iexplore 7 and i'm pretty sure i have a browser hijack issue. i can open a browser to my homepage (blank) and navigate and then the new browser closes.but i cannot open another browser. i get a new browser, briefly, with a message that it's connecting, and then the second browser closes. i have been getting a download alert that reads as follows:

    File: navcancl.dll (and also dnserror.dll and tabswelcome.dll)
Type: unknown file type 2.64 kb
    From: ieframe.dll

the text in the windows alert reads: "the file you are attempting to download cannot be opened by the default program. as a security precaution it is recommended that you cancel the download"

i am not actively trying to download when i get this message and i have cancelled the download repeatedly, but it keeps returning.

i use Windows Firewall, Grisoft AV, and i have run Adaware, CWShredder, and HiJack This. HJT found one object

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iexplorer] C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

which was id'd as "Nasty" and i removed it but the problem persists. so i've done about all i dare to do without smarter help.
i rummaged around on the HJT thread and read thru the instuctions there. i can account for pretty much everything else in the HJT logfile. i'm going to run another virus scan after this and see if anything pops up.

    Thanx

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
