viruses/Larissa n00b

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on a computer for a friend, and it is really messed up... For spyware, I have run Adaware SE Personal with updated definitions, Spybot S&D with updated definitions, and CWShredder. Adaware found over 600 critical objects... Took care of all that. These people have DSL, but everything is crawling...

Well, I was finally able to run a virus scan at PC Pitstop, and it detected 25 viruses... (I'm thinking, how does anyone let their computer get this bad???) One of them is the "Larissa n00b" thing, which is really annoying... They received it through MSN Messenger... What it does is it tries to close just about any program you are trying to run... Well, we went out and got Norton Antivirus 2005, but I cannot get it installed because the Larissa n00b virus tries to exit the Setup every time I try to run it... Please give me advice on what to do next... It is very difficult to make any progress because the viruses in her computer do not allow the necessary removal programs to run... Please advise...

PS. Computer is an HP running Windows XP... 128 Megs of ram, 1.2 gHz processor...

 

Please follow standard cleanup procedures as given below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.


After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file as your backups will not be safely stored.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifBefore running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.
