Vista boot black screen

Has anyone found a way to boot a vista machine just once to install the Microsoft Hotfix?

I posted this in another thread , but:


Do a parallel install into a new Windows folder, install the hotfix into THAT installation, then take the files contained in the hotfix and transplant them into the broken installation.

 

Here is some basic information.

Machine = HP Pavilion, Celeron D, Recovery partition, 160 GB SATA hard drive. On board NIC, video and audio.

Machine boots initial progress bar Vista screen, or scrolling text with safe modes,
Then switches to plain black screen
After a couple of seconds a moveable white mouse pointer appears.

And that's it. The machine will sit there like that for hours.

I can
access all the files by slaving to another machine.
access the registry by using regedit from repair console or ERD Commander disk or Avast disk (only Avast will load all the hives)

I have
run check disk

changed several files for older versions, including ntfs.sys, autochk.exe, userinit.exe, winlogon.exe, explorer.exe (And replaced)

removed all the run calls from the registry and replaced
removed all autochk calls from the registry and replaced
rummaged around registry and confirmed NT authority is correctly pointed

Changed the size of the partition on the drive
Attempted all the various F8 options including only load signed drivers
attempted repair options
replaced the registry with the only copy available
run the Prevx patch
Attempted the windows 7 repair console

Rummaged around the BIOS and disabled/enabled options NIC, audio etc
Physically removed other connected drives
Physically attempted to boot a different machine with hard drive

copied the partition to another drive and am working on the copy
