Vista Boot Problem after update

I recently received a microsoft update for Vista. Computer crashed during the update and only method to turn off laptop was to remove the battery. On restarting from off the laptop now starts to a black page 2 seconds in showing windows has encountered a problem and to start windows repair or start windows normally. On selecting either option the laptop returns to this page. I was hoping I could find a Vista Windows repair disk but this has long since been tidied away by the less PC minded of the family and is residing with the missing socks and Shirgar. Any ideas if I can download a repair? I have lots of data I don't want to lose and need to get back on this PC asap.

Remove the hd from the laptop and attach it to a working computer using an adapter similar to this through the USB port.

this will allow you to copy your files from the laptop drive to another computer so you can then restore the laptop to either factory condition or an earlier image.
