Vista Cleaning - RR Hangs - computer still slow

    Hi guys,
I completed the Read & Run Me First section, then completed the Vista cleaning section. I had a problem with RR hanging when I ran it. RR would start up and begin scanning, but would hang up with a popup window. I can't tell you what the window said as it acted as if it was frozen with the rear window info stuck in it and not displaying what the popup window was supposed to. It would, however, allow me to click the OKAY button on the popup window, but this would end up closing the entire program. I tried a couple times, even running it as admin, but that didn't work, so I skipped it and went on to MGTools. The programs found 2 infections (if I remember correctly) and deleted them.

We used to have Limewire, but uninstalled it, even though it's still showing in the logs and the folder is still in my Program Files. :confused

This computer is about 2 1/2 years old and has been used to death by myself and the rest of the family, including some children who were caught going places they thought they could hide from us. It runs painfully slow, rebooting frequently takes 10 minutes, and there have been times when it wouldn't finish booting up at all. I got excited while going through all the above steps because it seemed to speed up dramatically when booting, but since I'm done, it's back to its normal slow self. Opening programs (including browsers like Firefox and IE) can take several minutes and is incredibly frustrating.

We have a second computer set up right next to this one, so following directions is a little easier as we can keep it up and running while working on this one.

I'm attaching the log files as requested, except for RR, of course.

Thanks so much in advance, I look forward to getting this thing running better with your help!

Hello and a warm welcome. Let's see how things are running after completing the below:

    1. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    2. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    Symantec Lic NetConnect service

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    3. Now Run CCleaner (Not the registry section)

    4. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix.

    5. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

Ok, ran all of the programs as directed, logs are attached. Browsers open a little bit faster, however, booting is still very slow. The initial shut down and boot up is fairly quick (much better than it used to be). The problem seems to be when I enter the password to log on to windows. This last one was 5 minutes of a black screen after entering the password before it finally finished loading.

Another problem we seem to be having is with the router/internet. It's a wireless connection. The connection to "local access" remains, but the internet connection disappears, causing us to have to disconnect and reconnect to the router. This happens randomly, and once it starts, it seems to be a non-stop problem, sometimes 5 or 6 times in a 30 minute period. Just thought I'd mention this issue, as I don't know if the other problems may somehow be related. (We have been connected to other routers prior to this connection without this problem, so it may just be the router or its settings.)

Thanks again. Let me know if there's anything else I can do.

This is something you can troubleshoot out in the software forum, there is only a little left to take care of here in the malware forum.

Again, not topic for the malware forum, issues like this can be resolved in the networking forum.

You're welcome. Let's just do this:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete the below bold file:

    C:\ProgramData\surevepo

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall the following garbage:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
