As far as your bookmars and small files go. What I did is this. Download gdrive. Its free. Get yourself a gmail account. You have to be invited. I have tons of invites if you want one or I am sure others do as well. Now open gdive, and upload your small files to your gmail account. That way you always have them and you can download them at any time from anyplace.

To find your gdrive after you install it. Just open "My coumputer" icon. You will find the gdrive at the bottom below your c drive. As well back up what you can to either dvd or cd using nero or someother burning software. I use nero. Again. You will always have it no matter what. So if gdrive and gmail has no intrest to ya, burn your import stuff to dvd or cd. I use dvd. Hold more.

    Gmail no longer requires invites.

UFOs (unidentified flash drives) IFTUs (internet for the unwary) ............

Why make things so easy fellas?

Both hard drives are on the same computer, so do it the difficult way

The favorites folder in Vista is now under "Users"

    F:\Users\username\links

The favorites folder in XP is under the appropriate user in documents and settings.

    c:\documents and settings\username\favorites

You may need to set the appropriate folder view options in Explorer to copy them.

I work much better in the morning (and with less whining) than in the evening. The QuickBooks is on the XP drive WITH all of the data! And, MIRABILE DICTU, both printers and the plotter are working! I'm ready to KISS somebody!

It has only been three weeks! I might even put the side panels back on today. First I will try to find my favorites and maybe my email addresses. Something weird is happening there - when I click on Outlook to open it, it looks like two Outlooks are opening. Maybe I'm hallucinating from happiness, though.

Does anybody remember the first question I ever ask here? It was about not being able to write to my read/write drive. Bought a new one and installed it. STILL can't write to it. The reason I needed it was to back up my business files and now I can do that to the other hard drive, but it is still a mystery.

I will be back to let you know if I was able to find my favorites. And this time I can PRINT the instructions!

I didn't find the original, original favorites, (probably too many to be useful) but I found the ones that I have added in the last three weeks, so that's good.

I'm not coming up with any Outlook address books. Where should I be looking for them. And TWO Outlooks really are opening when I click the icon. What's that mean?

I only have one Outlook opening now, I don't know what was causing that. I still haven't found any old address books for Outlook. And there is a bell or sound from the tower every time it wants my attention. There wasn't one before. There must be a way in set up or somewhere to turn off the bell. Does anyone know?

I think I have the annoying beeps turned off now. I turned off the Windows fire wall to download something. Should I turn it back on or leave it off? And I know I had Adaware and Spybot before. Is it a good idea to use them?

Now your pc is settling down it's time to consider security.

Never never never surf the net using an 'administrator' account.

This is the biggest single thing you can do for security - over 75% of malware need to be in an 'administrator ' environment to function (install).

So create a new account for administering the pc.
Call it anything except administrator - california would do.
When you are sure this is working OK, demote your existing account(s)to 'limited user'.
You only need the admin account occasionally, so when you do, log off your user a/c and log onto your admin.

By all means get some antivirus - I recommend Avast (free) at the moment, and personally recommend Xoftspy from Pareto Logic for anti spy/ads, but you have to pay for this one and it is not essential. Ccleaner will probable suffice for most people with my other security measures in place.

I recommend using Spybot, Ccleaner, Adaware etc sparingly as they all seem to lead to grief in time for a significant portion of users.

The other good measure is to use an ehternet router/modem not a USB one.
this make your actual pc invisible to the outside and much harder to hack.

You only need the windows firewall unless you regularly host scary stuff.

Two useful security sites with some free stuff and some stuff you have to pay for but are worth it.

What about Norton? I have Norton Systemworks, but I haven't installed it, yet.

    Norton 2006 was good
    Norton 2007 Norton 360 was a disaster
Norton 2008 is supposed to be leaner and meaner

Some versions include antispyware but I've not heard of it bundled in System Works.

Now I know why when I ask questions on the Microsoft site they tell me I'm too dumb to live. I noticed that things are running slower. I looked and I am running from the smaller drive. The drive I am using just for back up is larger than the one I am running all the programs on. Sigh.
