This might need you to run a repair install of Vista to fix it, do you have the Dell Vista discs?

Ensure that the memory and the hard drive are seated correctly, remove and reseat each RAM stick and the hard drive.

    Read through the following:
Do as suggested in the bold type above.

It may be helpful if you could give the full BSOD error codes too: c000021a (0x........, 0x........, 0x........, 0x........), the same for the ?0xc000003a? too.

    c000021a 0xc000003a (0x000000000 0x000000000)

I pulled up the additional data. I hope it helps.

That helps clarify the error message, this is the MSFT troubleshooting page for it.

In your case, I'd suspect a damaged hard drive to be the cause, you'll need to check that it's still correctly fitted by removing then replacing it:
    YouTube demo.

Once that's been done, test the drive's fitness by running the Dell diags. You may be able to do this by changing the boot options, I think it's F2 to enter the setup as the laptop is booting, then F5 to run the diags - these are stored on a hidden part of the hard drive, it may work - or not. The other way to do this is by booting to the Dell diagnostics CD/DVD that you might have.

I reset the hard drive and ran the diagnostics for it. I received this message error code 0142 msg error code 2000-0142
msg hard drive 1 self test unsuccesful status 79
the given error code and msg can be used by dell tech support to help diagnose.......

What would you do as a next step?

That error message reads like the hard drive is damaged, the next step is to get any/all vital data copied off the drive before you decide on how/when you're going to replace it.

Do you have access to a recent PC that has a spare SATA cable? If so, you can connect the laptop drive internally to the PC and copy your data somewhere safe.

If not, you'll need to use a USB external drive caddy or adapter (like the one illustrated in #2 here), fit the drive and hook it up to a computer to access your data.

    Thanks Satrow:

I have ordered the 2.5"/3.5"/5.25" SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter - and am going to try to download data from the drive. Thanks for your needed help and I will be checking in with you after I try to download from the drive.

    Hi Satrow:
I used the sata/usb adapter to try to download some data and the recovery files. I was not able to do so. the drive was dead. I now have a new drive and would like the benefit of your expertise to find the recovery to OEM settings. As a side note, my desktop is a dell 530 with windows vista, and the laptop is an insiron 1525 also with windows vista. Could I use the recovery disk for the desktop to restore the laptop? The laptop was purchased in late 2008. When I went on Dell's website, they recommend datasafe v. 2.0 but I can't find a site to download it from. Can you help me with the next steps of restoring the computer to the original settings?

    Regards:

My best guess is that the Recovery disc(s) for the 530 will work on the laptop but you will probably need to download the drivers for it from the Dell site.

If the 530 disc fails, you should still be able to purchase a Recovery disc for the laptop directly from Dell, it will cost $$ though.

I don't have any experience of the DataSafe, all a quick search found was the online version. Checkout the Alienware (subsidiary of Dell) version here, it might be possible for you to use it.
