    Hey,

we've got a Vista Home Premium computer which we bought last week. I changed the default location from the pictures, documents and music folders to another map in another drive and when something went wrong, the link in the 'start' menu for music leads nowhere. It shows in the start menu, but doesn't exist on the computer for some reason.

I have a screen shot of the problem. Maybe there has to be something added to the registry or something.. i don't know how to get out of this one.

All the other links still work and the music folder with all the actual music does exist but has to be linked with the shortcut in the start-menu.

    Kind regards,

    Marco

Looking at your attached screen capture, I see what appears to be a blank address box (in the "Properties for Music" window) at the top. That's where you need to type in the new path to your music files I believe. And if, as I think you indicated, you moved your entire
Documents folder to the other drive you'll probably need to make the same change for Photographs and other media links.

I'm not very familiar with Vista so maybe someone else will weigh in with an easy way to update your folder paths for all your Documents stuff.

    Hi

How did you move this Music folder, just copied and pasted into the new loacation or did you initially right click the Music Folder choose > Properties > Location Tab and then Move?

Have you rebooted the PC?, odd occasions the path may not be picked up until a reboot.

If you right click the music folder where its located now and then choose its properties do you have the full list of tabs and especially Location? if so then in location click Restore, then move the folder as listed above.

See if the OS knows or lost the location of this folder try at the Start Search Box type shell:my music hit enter.

If you get an error on the above, try the below

Can also see if you can see in the registry where the location is set to My Music that the OS sees, but opening a CMD prompt and pasting this line in and hitting enter,

reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v "my music"

as another option if this has gone wrong in whichever way you moved the folder, try in C: > Users > your user name folder right click a blank space and right click > Properties > Previous Versions > open up last one and find your Music Folder then right click it and choose Send To > and Documents, *may need to log off or reboot* then may need to Cut and Paste it into the C: Users > Your User Name Folder and then right click Properties and try and set the Location of the Music folder back to Default ( Restore ) then try and move it again.

it was fixed when I started up the computer the next day, but i couldn't tell anyone because internet was out ever since it was fixed. I know i changed it the right way.

I initially right clicked the Music Folder > Properties > Location Tab and then moved to the other drive.

still a mistery how this happened... I don't know much about Vista yet and haven't had any problems besides that, but I think a lot of people will just go..

Ah cool Dutch, thanks for getting back to us and reporting the resolution, I had similar which is why I mentioned the reboot in my post! glad its all ok for you, its not a mystery, just many system chanages in many OSes need a reboot to finalise.

I been on Vista now for over 1yr in its final and 2.5yrs with the beta's and get uptodate hardware to run it and its damm stable, I X/Fingers have not had to re-install any of the 3 PCs I have it on.
