Hi everyone, I could use some help cause I'm at the end of my rope...

Just built myself a new PC for the first time in years, consisting of:

    Vista Home Premium OEM
    ASUS B5B Deluxe
    Core 2 Duo E6400
    2GB Crucial Ballistix
ASUS EAX1600PRO 512MB Silent Video Card
    Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Sound
    320GB Western Digital SATA HDD
    Sony DVD ROM
    LiteOn DVD RW
    Seasonic 550W PSU
    Antec Solo Case

It wasn't too long after I first installed Vista that my programs started freezing for 30 seconds-1 minute. It could be any program, from IE & Firefox, to AIM, Thunderbird, Winamp, etc. Sometimes the Vista UI itself would also freeze.

Also, when I start up the computer it is at times difficult to get into Vista because of this screen I get...

    ----------------------------------
    WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Chose your language settings, and then click "Next."
    3. Click "Repair your computer. "

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or manufacturer for assistance.

    File: \Windows\system32\config\system

    Status: 0xc00000e9

Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt.
    ----------------------------------

Tried the repair, doesn't really help.

I have done 3 clean installs of Vista on the machine, and it happens every time.

I'm afraid you are in for the long slog of finding the incompatibility as something in your system is Vista incompatible. One day when all pcs are built like this there will be a service note for others to follow.
The incompatibility may be hardware or software. Roxio CD/cdrw stuff is incompatible for instance.
You will have to remove components one at a time until you find the little bugger. I would start by looking closely at the cd drives and their associated software and move on to audio, modem, network card.......

Let us know when you find the L.B. so we can give it a good geeking.

I just re-formatted for a 4th time, after clearing the CMOS and re-seating video card/ sound card/ memory, etc. for the heck of it.

Didn't plug in my HP Printer or any other USB devices this time.

Also disabled the "Unknown Device" that is the ATK0110 ACPI UTILITY in task manager, because Vista had reported a problem with it from my earlier experience.

HMM, did you check your memory? The error you posted is usually associated with drivers, Something's corrupting your install. MS DVD or your own?

Oh yes. Forgot to mention that everything seemed fine when I ran the Memory Diagnostics tool. Is there any other test I should run?

And the Vista disc is Microsoft all the way.

Try memtest86+ for your RAM but I doubt that's the issue.confused

Does XP load on there? Just grasping at straws ATM.confused

Well it loads into the OS after I restart a few times... but then my programs will freeze, making doing anything a pain in the butt.

It would be interesting to try one of your installs to a non sata hard drive,
but I still think your problem is to do with the dvd rom or dvdrw, did you remove one like I suggeste?
I saw nearly the exact same problem of Friday afternoon and reported it to MG, but got no answers.
You say it happens with any program and seem to have loaded quite a few. Perhaps you might load one at a time and test for a while.

I haven't removed any drives yet... I will if the problem comes up again. I'm currently running the system with the "ATK0110 ACPI Utility" disabled, and knock-on-wood it is working so far.

Thanks for the suggestion, as that will be my next step.

Seemed to be running flawlessly for the last 4 days, until this evening when it started showing symptoms again...

Whenever I open a program now, or do something that is taxing the CPU, I can see it spike up pretty high on the Performance tab in the Task Manager. And my Winamp playback will skip and stutter. It feels like I'm on a ten year old computer trying to run Vista. Winamp or Youtube playback will stutter sometimes even when I'm not doing anything else.

    Frustration City.

Programs are starting to randomly freeze again, (saying "Not Responding"). For instance, just used the "back" button on Mozilla Firefox, and it froze. It did recover about 15 seconds later.

Vista has problems with some routers, due to new feature called 'receive window auto tuning' I've always had Hertz do that to my car in the past!

Anyway open a command prompt as administrator
    typein
    netsh interface tcp show global
    press return

Post the list of parameters shown

If receive side auto-tuning level is set to normal try

netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
    return
