I don't know if anyone is still posting on this thread, however....

I just built my very first computer and I can't get past the whole registry corrupt thing. Is there anyone out there that can talk in old empty nest housewife-ese (i.e. simple terms) and tell me what to do next?

Hello Munchkin Soup and welcome to MajorGeeks,

I'm not the right person to help you, never built anything or hardware smart. Your post made me smile though and had to try and help a little.

    Re:
Noticed a thread similar to yours and you both have a LITE-ON DVD installed, so this may give you some ideas.

StudioT stops by, he or others might be able to give you more detailed advice on whether it's LITE-ON causing the issue.

    Best of luck,

    Cat

So... This is what I have attempted

I tried each ram individually. The first wouldn't do anything and then the other got me all the way thru the vista installation UNTIL I got to the windows update and then it crashed. I tried it 3x and it crashes at the same point with different error messages.

    My rationalization is that:

    a. I really don't know what the heck I am doing
    b. Apparently, I got a case of the bad RAM
    c. I really don't know what the heck I am doing

I am going thru the whole tiring issue of returning the ram (in its original packaging as instructed) and waiting for the replacement.

My question is: Is the RAM the probable cause or could it be a bad Motherboard (please say no)?

I have to wonder why you decided to build a computer. Buying a whole new system would have been so much easier.

Anyway, how did you determine which memory to order? I visited the OCZ website and tried using their memory configurator but could not find motherboard model 132-YW-E180-A1 under EVGA.

Exactly what do you mean by "I can't get past the whole registry corrupt thing"? I think we need a lot more detail here before anyone can help you with this.

I am building this computer simply because I am enjoying myself...Plus, it gives me a valuable excuse to not help my newly retired husband with his new obsession - THE LANDSCAPING. You need to install RAM in pairs (matched pairs or at least two from the same batch).

    Single sticks will not do.

Look at the mothoboard instructions to fiond out which of the 4 sockets to install them in and if the BIOS is auto detect.

Right - I was trying to figure out if one or both were faulty. What I did was to return the ram and bought a different brand. Worked perfectly and I am now the proud mama of my very own self-built computer. My original RAM must have not been compatible with my mobo. ]

Live and learn...or in this case, build and learn. Thanks for the suggestion.
