Vista Giving Me Warning Of Hardrive Failure How Much Time Do I have?

woke up today and turned on my machine everything seemed normal, about 20 minutes into my login, i get a warning from vista os that my drive C is going to fail soon and it need to be backed up soon.

Has anybody else experienced this 2? and what happed to you.
I have already backed up my drive to my 'backup' drive using acronis, I just wondered how much time i had?

Wow I wasn't aware Vista had the capabilities of doing this. IMO if you get a hard drive warning, get it taken care of immediately (backups, ghosting, etc). Can't really predict when they will fail though. SMART errors for example, may indicate your drive is failing. It may work for 5 min or 5 years. It may fail completely to the point where the system does not even recognize the drive or it may just pop an error or two up every once in a while.

 

Test your HDD by running the HDD manufactures free diagnostic utility.

 

well it's been running fine for 24 hrs, so 5 minutes to 5 years ? I have backed up, so thats taken care of, I will go to western digital website and see if i can download a diagnostic program, thanks guys....

 

ran the western digital diagnostics program for hardrives, and yes, it's failing, some of the numbers were in the 50's and they were supposed to be in the 200's, so i guess i should be ready to go shopping.

whats funny, is i don't even have SMART enabled in the bios, and VISTA detected it! that's pretty cool.

I guess it's time to get one of those 500GB hardrives for $149 :drool
