I'm working on "downgrading" a Toshiba Satellite P200-AB1 from Vista to XP. I have done some research on this and I know that I have to get the XP drivers for the SATA HDD. But the BIOS doesn't give me that option. If I replace the Toshiba HDD with a Samsung will I be able to download XP.

Let me rephrase my question: Do I need to change the HDD or is it a BIOS issue and I need to attempt to change the BIOS in order to put XP on the Toshiba laptop.

Here's the deal with SATA hard drives: Vista has built-in native support for SATA hard drives. WindowsXP does not. This is true regardless of the make of the drive. Some laptops (very few) have a setting in BIOS that allows XP to recognize a blank/new SATA hard drive. However, if you can format the hard drive as an NTFS partition first, then boot to the XP CD, you can then install Windows XP to it w/o problems. You can either remove the drive and hook it up to a functioning PC (with XP or Vista or even Win2000 will work), or you can use a bootable utility to partition/format the drive. Most hard drive manufacturers have these bootable tools available as free downloads on their web sites.

NOTE: do your research FIRST and make sure that XP drivers are even available for the PC. Many, MANY people have wiped out Vista only to realize that there are no XP drivers available, and had to go through the trouble of re-installing Vista.
