    Hello
I am a new user of Win Vista.

I did install it on another partition along side with win XP
However i just barely got to install all the small programs like a few anti-virus / add ware programs , mp3 player , web browser etc.

Did all the Updates and stuff installed SP1 drivers etc.

However i was totally freaked out by the fact that i started off with 4gb on the Win Vista and when i was done it uses over 17gb !!!

compared to my win XP witch i had for a longer time and had way more stuff installed on it i found that hard to belive. evan now the Win XP has about 2.4gb vs a 17.8gb vista that's not normal in any case
I did twink the system restore shadowfiles or whatever they are called , set the allocation of disk space to minimum , witch freed up some of the drive space but the size was still huge

Anyhow i took a look in the win folder and i found a winsxs folder witch is 7.8GB in size
I tryed to delete that but it didn't alow me to
How can i get rid of that ? because obviousley i don't need that stuff it's ridiculous since it's half of the total win folder

    Thx for the reply

I did some research of my own and there's no way that you can delete that pig of a folder from windows
I found out a way to move it but that dosen't solve the problem
Maybe if i move it to an already full partition ... hmmm ... don't think that will work eather

Anyway the windows automatic update leaves the "archives" in the windows folder evan if they got installed
Since i got SP1 and full updates i got rid of them and that cleared up aprox. 5gb

My guess is that the "pig" is gonna get fatter over time and my HDD isn't that big

I understand that that Side-by-side Assemblies makes it more stable and it seems that you if you manage somehow to get rid of it you better have the windows cd ready for a fresh install :(

Don't know what Microsoft was thinking when they made this OS with such a big space requirement

It is slower than XP and the processor is beeing used for no good reason however i must admit that the security is more solid
the Super Tweaks guide made it faster however thx BILLMCC66

    Vista performance varies with hardware.

However, it is a very solid performer. Its only natural that it is slower than XP. XP was slower than Windows 2000, which was slower than 98, and so on. I can say that I don't see a real difference in performance between Vista and XP since SP1, except maybe in games. That gap is closing as drivers mature, however. Remember XP had a huge headstart in driver maturity.

People complain about Vista's space requirements, but once again, it is only natural. For example, the space requirements for Apple's latest offering is 9 GB. XP was only 1.5 GB. Does that make OS X a pig too? If your CPU is being used for "no good reason", perhaps there is an issue with malware? Something to think about.
