We finally broke down and bought a new PC for my Fiance. We picked up a Compaq Presario SR5613WM. It unfortunately comes with Vista (I'm not looking forward to my PC needing to be replaced).

    Our troubles are:

1)freezes anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours

2)occassionally makes a noise when it freezes

3)An unstable internet connection (Linksys RangePlus PCI Adapter and Wireless-G Router)... We both have said adapter and I do not have the issues on my HP with XP

He uninstalled Norton, we prefer Avast and Zone Alarm (but can't DL either since can't connect long enough).

My Question is how do we get the Wireless adapter to work with his Vista and once we do is there a solution to the freezing (was this a normal problem and an update will fix it?)

Is there an easy solution (ex. a way for his old hard drive to boot up on his new PC) because we just spent $500 on the tower and really can't afford the extra $100 for XP at this moment.

As a note this is the second one (he bought one yesterday and exchanged it today) with the exact same issues.

Intersting. Sounds more like the PC to me (I have Vista and it's fine for me!) If it was just the wireless I'd say that that probably needs upgrading but if the computer goes down too...........

    Good luck!

I am of the same opinion that it sounds more like a hardware and not a software problem.

I can only suggest that you contact your supplier and explain what is happening.

If you bought the PC with Vista installed then it should not have any difficulty with the OS, it sounds more like a power or overheating problem??

I agree with Mark but i find it strange that it does not run straight out of the box which is what you would expect (unless it's been infected somehow)

Odds are it isn't over heating as I said it usually takes from 30 minutes to 4 hours for it to freeze (although this morning it froze in 5)

I'm looking at the Norton thing (and DLing it on my PC to ensure Norton is gone on mine) but we still run into the same problem... He can't stay online long enough or keep the system unfrozen long enough to get to the sites read their steps and DL programs off of them...

If we could get the new PC to boot from his old hard drive this would probably not be an issue :sigh: but that just reboots over and over and over (although we can get programs off of it while piggy backed)... Never even gets to the windows page though...

I'm gonna try and get the stuff DL'd for him hopefully it'll stay online long enough...

If this doesn't work does anyone know how to make his PC boot off of his old hard drive with out the blue screen of death and restart repeatedly?

Thank you for the advice and will let you know how it turns out.

Okay we removed the wireless adapter went to a ethernet cable... that seems to have solved the unstable connection issue but not the freezing issue...

This is not the first computer we got, we returned the first one because of the same exact issue.

It's Specifications are at this site http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...67&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3801314&lang=en

I just find it hard to believe that two identical computers would have the exact same issue unless it's the OS itself but I'm no computer expert.

Getting frustrated... but maybe the updates that we couldn't get earlier will solve the freezing issue... otherwise he's muttering about buying XP next weekend.

I've heard so many horror stories about Vista I'm glad at least one person is enjoying it

See the thing is though that we just discovered that a co-worker of his who purchased a new PC six months ago bought one with Vista on it an it has the same issues as ours does and the one my fiance purchased was only introduced 3 months ago. Googling the Freezing problem that he has it seems to be pretty across the board occurrence covering a wide range of brands including Dell. He's got a call into a customer of his that works on Computers to see what he says.

:sigh: Maybe I'll let him just buy the XP and see if that fixes the issue, the store we purchased it from has a 15 day thing plus he bought the extra 2 year coverage for it.

It'd be so much easier and cheaper if we could just get it to boot off his old hard drive, that has XP, we have it hooked into his PC it just won't boot from it (although we can transfer stuff between the two hard drives).

we returned it to the store... I'm checking Tiger Direct to see if we can build one or to repair his current one (he wants a "New" so probably will end up building but I know nothing about that either  anyway Thank you again for all your help
