Vista problems

Ok, so... I am on an HP Pavilion dv9000
Nvidia Gefore G0 7600
Intel Core2 CPU T5300 @ 1.73 GHz
"Conexant High Definition Audio"
2gb ram
160gb hd

Here are my problems:

Recently - meaning yesterday - music has stopped playing. WMP is not recognizing anything, giving me an error stating that A) I don't have access to folder (logged in as admin) B) file type not accepted (.mp3....) and C) my proxy settings are messed up (wtf?)

I then downloaded ZOOM media player, and it too would not play any music. Limewire's native media player will not play any music, and although VLC will play a movie, it will play picture ONLY, no sound whatsoever.

Now, obviously from this information it would appear to be a hardware problem. However, other sound does work. When I am using AIM I hear the message sounds, and I can also hear sounds from various streaming internet apps.

These are two other problems, though not as big as the music.

1) my computer is telling me that I am not connected to a network, but since I am online I would be so bold as to say it's reading wrong

2)My DXDIAG information is not working, most of the fields are being listed as n/a.

I am running Mcafee (NOT BY CHOICE!!!), ad-aware, spybot, ccleaner, and a few other programs normally as far as antimalware goes.

lol... i downloaded this codec from another site and ran it, but got an error... this download, however, did work.
